Effect of Samarium Oxide on Structural and Optical Properties of Zinc Silicate Glass Ceramics from Waste Material

Abstract: This work indicates the synthesis of samarium doped zinc silicate (willemite) glass ceramics with different weight concentrations. Solid-state reaction technique was used to make up the samples, with waste rice husks as silicate source. The measurement of X-ray diffraction revealed sharp and broad diffraction peaks. Besides, the Field emission scanning electron microscope exhibited the poly grains morphology of the crystalline samples. Consequently, samarium strips were growing in size as the weight percent of… Show more

“…From the light and heavy REMs, samarium and gadolinium were selected due to their relevance to many areas of modern life. Samarium is widely used in the following spheres: magnetic materials; thermoelectric materials; and production of special luminescent and infrared-absorbing glasses [ 56 , 57 , 58 , 59 , 60 , 61 ]. Gadolinium is mainly used in the following areas: creation of storage media with enormous recording density; nuclear energetics; thermoelectric materials; and superconductors [ 62 , 63 , 64 , 65 ].…”

“…α-Zn 2 SiO 4 with polymorph of zinc orthosilicate as the most commonly found crystalline phase in Zn 2 SiO 4 glass-ceramics. Significant attention has been put on the fabrication of Zn 2 SiO 4 as it offers excellent glass transparency [8] and substantial fluorescence characteristics [9]. Optically, its wide bandgap has made it attentively produced as light-emitting diodes [7], laser diodes [10], display panel [11], and cathode-ray phosphor [12].…”

“…This study was carried out in order to provide more data on the effect of Sm 3+ ions on zinc borotellurite glass and the potential applications for laser and optical devices. It is expected that the addition of samarium oxide in the glass network will enhance the optical properties of the glass by lowering the optical band gap [13]. Their physical properties by mean of their density and molar volume as well as their optical properties will be analysed and presented.…”
