Salt stress is an abiotic stress known to affect plant growth and distribution. In this investigation, this expectation was tested on germination, seedlings' survival and genetic diversity of Robinia pseudoacacia (black locust). To do this, seeds of R. pseudoacacia collected from a natural population were sown on soil media of different salt concentrations (0.6, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7 and 8 g/kg), after which germination and seedlings survival rates were observed. Subsequently, genomic DNA was isolated from leaf samples for genetic analysis using 10 nuclear SSR primers. The results show that seed germination and seedling survival significantly reduced with increase in salt concentration. Specifically, R. pseudoacacia seedlings did not grow on soils with salt concentrations higher than 6 g/kg. As regards the effect of salt stress on genetic diversity of R. pseudoacacia seedlings, the overall result from 10 nuclear microsatellite primers revealed an increase in heterozygosity as salt concentration increased, which suggested selection against homozygosity under salt stress. This result further supports the fact that heterozygosity is one of the factors that ensures that tree populations are adaptable to salt stress. Therefore, management of forest tree populations should be geared towards managing genetic diversity in order to engender survival under salt stress.

The study aimed to determine the effects of humic acid (HA) on seedlings of a salt-sensitive plant, mung bean (Vigna radiata (L.) Wilczek), grown on 50 mM (S1) and 100 mM (S2) NaCl concentrations. In controlled room conditions, mung bean seedlings were planted in pots containing torf and perlite mixture and salt effects were observed. The growth parameters were plant height, number of leaves, leaf area, leaf and stem fresh and dry weights in which all parameters significantly decreased at both salt levels. Nutrient analyses of Na, K and Ca were conducted by flame photometry (FP), and Mg, Mn, Zn were tested by inductively coupled plasma atomic emission spectrometry (ICP-AES), for the above and below ground parts of mung bean seedlings. Both salt treatments increased Na content significantly, however 10 ml addition of HA to those samples (S1HA and S2HA; 50 mM NaCl and 100 mM NaCl, respectively) caused reductions in Na contents of the above-ground parts of mung bean compared to plants watered with only Hoagland-Arnon solutions (HO). On the other hand, in the roots of mung bean seedlings, Na content rose significantly in S2 compared with control, but the amount of Na in S2HA significantly increased compared with S2 treated plants. K content was significantly decreased in both salt concentrations, while SHA1 and SHA2 caused slight increases in both above and underground parts of seedlings. In the experiment, SHA2 increased the content of K, Mg, Ca, Mn and Zn in the root of mung bean seedlings compared with both S1 and S2 treatments.

Results of the present study revealed that the application of all the studied treatments decreased soil bulk density, hydraulic conductivity, pH, EC, soluble Na, SAR and ESP values, while increased cation exchange capacity, organic matter content, total N as well as available amounts of P, K, Fe, Mn, Zn and Cu in soil.Data also indicated that all the treatments significantly increased the grain yields of wheat and corn plants and the treatment (20 kg humic acids/fed.) was the best one. The rate of increment over the control due to such treatment reached 39.49 and 37.68 % for wheat and corn grain yields, respectively. Also, macro and micronutrient concentrations of such grains were significantly increased by increasing the application rates of the applied conditioners.Based on results of the current study, it can be concluded that using biochar and humic acids as organic conditioners is helpful to improve soil properties, compensate the deficiency of nutrients in soil and have significant effects on the productivity of wheat and corn plants. These materials are easily producible, biodegradable, less expensive, cause no environmental hazards to human health and will be ecologically safe and culturally more acceptable among farmers. So, it can be recommended to use such materials as soil conditioners under salt affected soil conditions.
