Effect of royal jelly on experimental colitis Induced by acetic acid and alteration of mast cell distribution in the colon of rats

Abstract: This study investigated the effects of royal jelly (RJ) on acetic acid-induced colitis in rats. Twenty adult female Wistar albino rats were divided into four treatment groups of 5 animals each, including a control group (Group I); Group II was treated orally with RJ (150 mg kg−1 body weight); Group III had acetic acid-induced colitis; and Group IV had acetic acid-induced colitis treated orally with RJ (150 mg kg−1 body weight) for 4 weeks. Colitis was induced by intracolonic instillation of 4% acetic acid; the… Show more

“…The RJ contains vitamins such as E and C (Karaca et al, ) which have been reported that can reduce oxidative stress via MDA levels and superoxide dismutase and glutathione peroxidase activities improvement in diabetic patients erythrocytes (Pourmoradian, Mahdavi, Mobasseri, Faramarzi, & Mobasseri, ). Additionally, previous reports have indicated that RJ has membranoprotective effect during sperm freezing (Shahzad et al., ).…”

“…Bee pollen, honey and royal jelly have demonstrated remarkable antimicrobial and pro-regenerative characteristics. Pre-clinical studies described an improvement of disease scores following royal jelly application in a number of conditions including mucositis, colitis, bone formation and infected ulcers (El-Gayar et al, 2016;Karaca et al, 2010;Özan et al, 2015;Suemaru et al, 2008). Furthermore, honey has been shown to be strongly antibacterial against various bacterial strains (e.g.…”
