Effect of Rotary Swaging on Microstructure, Texture, and Mechanical Properties of a Mg‐Al‐Zn Alloy

Abstract: The effect of rotary swaging on the microstructure, texture, and mechanical properties of the magnesium alloy Mg‐4.4Al‐0.9Zn‐0.4Mn is studied. Repetitive processing, conducted at progressively dropped deformation temperature (from 400 down to 200 °C), leads to an increase in the cumulative strain ε. Rotary swaging of the alloy is shown to lead to microstructure fragmentation due to intensive twinning on various crystallographic planes. A high density of twins observed at the final stage of deformation, at ε = … Show more

“…should be explored. In addition, extra deformation processing steps, for example, rotary swaging [41,42] carried out after ECAP may be a viable pathway to achieving the desired combination of properties. We intend to continue such investigations of the mechanical and biological properties of magnesium alloys, as well as the possibility of their modification in various ways.…”

“…In addition, quantitative understanding of the underlying strengthening mechanism of cold deformed Mg alloy is of significant importance. For Mg and Mg alloys, cold deformations are mostly carried out via various kinds of forging, such as rotary swaging [ 6 , 7 , 8 ] and multi-directional forging [ 5 , 9 ]. Because the triaxial compressive stress condition of forging could help reduce crack and the strain rate can be better controlled, compared with rolling and extrusion.…”

“…In addition, both the RSed pieces exhibited the presence of residual stress in the peripheral areas of W agglomerates. However, in HCP metals, the effect of temperature on RS is significant [ 79 ]. Estrin et al demonstrated the viability of the processing of Mg–4.4%Al–0.9%Zn–0.4%Mn alloy prepared by RS with concurrent temperature drops (from 400 down to 200 °C) and found that the decreasing of temperature leads to more strain accumulation, induces secondary deformation twins form within the primary twins and exacerbates the dispersion of textures [ 79 ].…”
