Effect of Rehabilitation of Completely Edentulous Patients With Complete Dentures on Temporomandibular Disorders: A Systematic Review

Abstract: The present study evaluates the effect of rehabilitating completely edentulous patients with complete denture prosthesis on temporomandibular disorders (TMD). The Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) standards were used to perform this systematic review, primarily to describe the technique. Manuscripts published between 1965 and December 31, 2021, were searched in the two most common electronic databases, PubMed and Cochrane Library. To find relevant scientific papers on … Show more

“…The temporomandibular joint (TMJ) acts as a crucial interface in the biomechanics of mastication, which is directly influenced by the occlusal dynamics introduced by dentures [49]. In a systematic review, Nimonkar et al [50] critically examine five peer-reviewed articles selected based on temporomandibular disease and removable dentures. These articles suggest that complete dentures, particularly when carefully designed to restore the vertical dimension and proper occlusal relationships, can significantly alleviate TMD symptoms in edentulous patients.…”

“…The discussions within the review emphasize the necessity for well-fabricated dentures and highlight that while current studies support the benefits of dentures in TMD management, further high-quality randomized clinical trials are required to solidify these findings and optimize treatment protocols. This review provides a foundational perspective on the intersection of prosthodontics and temporomandibular health, pointing towards a nuanced understanding of the biomechanical and rehabilitative interactions facilitated by complete dentures in managing TMDs [49][50][51].…”

“…The findings showed that individuals were happy when their smiles displayed all of their teeth and some gingiva, but they were unhappy when their smiles displayed an unbalanced amount of gingiva [ 38 ]. According to surveys on how buccal corridors are perceived during smiles, orthodontists and prosthodontists greatly value smiles with them, in contrast to laypeople who think smiles with and without them are similar [ 39 ]. One intriguing study found that orthodontic specialists were more receptive to gummy smiles than dentistry students [ 40 ].…”
