Effect of regular small group instruction per se on oral health status of Danish schoolchildren

Abstract: A 1-year study of the isolated effect of an intensive motivation program aimed at improving the oral health status of 11-13-year-old schoolchildren was conducted in a Danish provincial town where all children have access to a free and comprehensive school oral health program. The effect was negligible as measured by epidemiologic indices.

“…Such programs, conducted in the USA (15,16) or in England (1) were found to yield little or no effect on caries increment. In Denmark, the effect of regular small group instruction per se was found to produce only modest and not statistically significant results with respect to caries increment (9). However, when professional prophylaxis was used, in other Scandinavian studies (8,12,13,17) significant caries reduction was obtained.…”

“…From the results of several information-motivation clinical trials it may be assumed that oral hygiene instruction alone (9,10) or purely mechanical plaque-control devoid of any motivational efforts (11) do not result in satisfactory oral health improvement. In the present investigation, permanent motivation reinforcement resulted in significantly improved dental behavior in the test group.…”

“…Future dental services for this age group should be based on a broadbased strategy including collaboration with all medical personnel at the hospital and dispensaries in the area (2)(3)(4)(5). This type of sample may be biased, but was the only possible way of collecting data for this age group.…”

“…If one turns around and check the prevalence of the occurrence of the number of fungal infections caused by Candida and related species, then we will find that there is a dramatic and exponential increase in over the past several decades. C.albicans may play a vital role in the infrastructure of periodontal microbiota as well as on adherence of periodontal tissues Candida species have evolved as the most important opportunistic pathogens in immunocompromised hosts and may play an important role in life-threatening infections (3,4,5,6,7) .…”
