Effect of rat salivary glands extracts on the proliferation of cultured skin cells - a wound healing model

Abstract: The results suggest that each salivary gland has a specific effect on wound healing and the combination of the three extracts has an additive effect but no the sum of all individual glands. This model might be useful to study the wound healing effect of salivary glands.

“…In fact, the placenta is an organ rich in TF [6,7], with a concentration of 31 ng mg −1 (range: 25–37 ng mg −1 ) total protein, as compared with 0.004 ng mg −1 total protein measured in the plasma of the same women [8]. Interestingly, placental extracts have been used since ancient times to accelerate wound healing [9,10], and TF seems to be involved in this process, similarly to the wound‐healing effects of TF in saliva [11,12].…”

“…Pain-related behaviors, such as excessive grooming or licking of the tumor-bearing leg, are only slightly observed here. Reasons for this may be that there is no acute nociceptive pain ( Deutsch et al, 2021 ) or acute skin injury and extensive licking of the skin in this chronic CIBP model is not beneficial or necessary for the animal ( Grossman et al, 2004 ). Furthermore, chronic pain conditions are very energy-consuming, so reducing or altering behavior, especially play, exploration, courtship, and mating, prevents reinjury and ensures that resources are initially reserved for defense, which seems reasonable from an evolutionary perspective ( Williams, 2016 ).…”

“…Serum is important for supporting cell viability and pH maintenance ( 7 ), whereas saliva is important in oral hygiene, food digestion and the repair of mucosal damage, as demonstrated by animal behavioural experiments and in vivo analysis of patients ( 8 ). Studies have suggested that saliva and serum are functionally similar and reflect the physiological state of the body ( 9 – 11 ), and that saliva is a non-invasive sample for potential clinical diagnosis.…”
