Effect of Quinacridone Pigments on Properties and Morphology of Injection Molded Isotactic Polypropylene

Abstract: Two quinacridone pigments were added (0.01; 0.05; 0.1; 0.5; 1; 2 wt%) to isotactic polypropylene (iPP), and their influence on mechanical and thermomechanical properties were investigated. Complex mechanical and thermomechanical iPP properties analyses, including static tensile test, Dynstat impact resistance measurement, and hardness test, as well as dynamic mechanic thermal analysis (DMTA), were realized in reference to morphological changes of polymeric materials. In order to understand the differences in m… Show more

“…Polymer coloring entails the synergistic incorporation of colorants and polymers to enhance aesthetics and value-added across diverse applications. A pigment is one of the colorants that is incorporated with thermoplastics in the polymer coloring [ 1 , 2 , 3 , 4 , 5 , 6 , 7 , 8 , 9 ]. Characterized by their insolubility and solid composition, pigment particles within the polymer matrix exhibit aggregate formations with irregular shapes.…”

“…Both organic and inorganic pigments serve as essential colorants for PPCP and ABS [ 1 ]. Notably, organic pigments, such as those discussed in the literature [ 3 , 6 , 7 ], are recognized as nucleating agents for polypropylene, exerting a profound influence on polymer crystallization. This impact is manifested in shrinkage during injection molding [ 3 ] and variations in coloring efficiency [ 7 ].…”

“…Several factors, e.g. : the undercooling ratio [26,27], the effect of nucleating agents [28][29][30][31] and the shear forces influence [32][33][34] have a strong impact on creating the supermolecular structure in iPP, especially the β-form. In the processing of polypropylene with use of the most popular techniques, e.g., extrusion or injection molding, shear forces affect the polymer.…”

“…The former mostly applied as commercial pigment mixture Cinquasia red, is in industrial use since the 1970s and has accordingly been studied before, including modifications of the composition [37,38]. More recent work has been done in terms of cooling rate effect [2,39] and other processing-related phenomena [40,41]. The latter, having the advantage of being both colorless and highly efficient in a wide range of iPP types [42,43], showed some difficulties in market introduction.…”
