Anaerobic digestion of waste activated sludge (WAS) is most commonly used at wastewater treatment facilities to stabilize the sludge. However, poor biodegradation efficiency of sludge and longer retention times (20-30 days) are the major limitations of anaerobic digestion method, which can be overcome by disintegrate the sludge and make intracellular material readily available to anaerobic biodegradation. Several sludge disintegration techniques (Thermal, chemical and mechanical) and their combinations were studied previously in order to improve the anaerobic digestibility of sludge, reduce the sludge retention time and enhance the production of biogas. However, none of the pretreatment technique shows a real breakthrough in enhancement of anaerobic digestibility of WAS due to associated drawbacks, such as high operational and capital cost, poor sanitization and energy intensive. On the other hand, hybrid pretreatment techniques endow with promising outcomes through neutralizing the associated drawbacks with individual pretreatment techniques. Nevertheless, the research on the application of hybrid pretreatment techniques is in its infant stage, presently. Therefore, the satisfactory research in this direction can lead to policy maker and environmental protection agency to select more robust and sustainable solution for sludge treatment. This review encompasses the up-to-date information about the thermal, chemical and mechanical sludge disintegration techniques (principle, performance at lab, pilot and full scale, advantages and disadvantages). A comparative evaluation of these techniques are also presented in terms of COD solubilization, dewaterability, pathogens removal, lab/pilot/full scale application, capital and, operation and maintenance cost involved and energy requirement.

Sustainable development requires the development and promotion of environmental management and a constant search for green technologies to treat a wide range of aquatic and terrestrial habitats contaminated by increasing anthropogenic activities. Bioremediation is an increasingly popular alternative to conventional methods for treating waste compounds and media with the possibility to degrade contaminants using natural microbial activity mediated by different consortia of microbial strains. Many studies about bioremediation have been reported and the scientific literature has revealed the progressive emergence of various bioremediation techniques. In this review, we discuss the various in situ and ex situ bioremediation techniques and elaborate on the anaerobic digestion technology, phytoremediation, hyperaccumulation, composting and biosorption for their effectiveness in the biotreatment, stabilization and eventually overall remediation of contaminated strata and environments. The review ends with a note on the recent advances genetic engineering and nanotechnology have had in improving bioremediation. Case studies have also been extensively revisited to support the discussions on biosorption of heavy metals, gene probes used in molecular diagnostics, bioremediation studies of contaminants in vadose soils, bioremediation of oil contaminated soils, bioremediation of contaminants from mining sites, air sparging, slurry phase bioremediation, phytoremediation studies for pollutants and heavy metal hyperaccumulators, and vermicomposting.

Organic carbon is the main source of energy and matter necessary for the development of micro-organisms. Removing the suspension from the wastewater in the primary settling tank causes a reduction in the concentration of organic compounds and their hydrolysis products including volatile fatty acids (VFA). As a result, the ratio of organic matter to nitrogen and phosphorus in wastewater after sedimentation is lower than in raw wastewater. Volatile fatty acids, especially acetic acid, are the most desirable and assimilable form of organic carbon. In biological wastewater treatment processes, the content of easily biodegradable organic carbon significantly influences the rate and efficiency of denitrification and dephosphorylation. There are a many of solutions that increase the content of organic matter, including VFA, in wastewater. The basic solutions include sedimentation time reduction, and in particular the use of the concepts of active primary settling tank with acid fermentation process. Other technological solutions are based on the use of acid fermentation in fermentors or special thickeners. The rate of acid fermentation process, leading to the formation of VFA is dependent on many factors. The basic limiting factors include content of biodegradable organic substance and temperature. The aim of the study was to evaluate the possibility of using sonication to intensify the production of volatile fatty acids from primary sludge in acid fermentation. The aim of the study was also to determine the combined effect of sonication time (sonication energy) and temperature of acid fermentation on the yield of volatile fatty acids. During the study, VFA generation was inhibited by the increase in sonication energy. The most effective acid fermentation, due to the production of LKT, was carried out under conditions of psychrophilic temperature i.e. 20°C.
