Effect of process parameters on pulsed laser welding of AA5083 alloy using response surface methodology and pulse shape variation

Abstract: Aluminium alloys exhibit eco-friendly aspects related to global environmental issues, such as almost unlimited recyclability. Nevertheless, some intrinsic characteristics are challenges to explore all their benefits. In the welding process, the high thermal conductivity and low melt point require high control of heat input. Alternatively, the pulsed laser mode provides a sharp beam focus with precise control enabling regulating the energy delivered. In this sense, this present work analysed the effect of pulse… Show more

“…The main factors influencing the welding quality in the TIG welding process are the welding current, the welding voltage, and the welding speed. To determine the optimal process parameters for welding, a three-factor, three-level, three-response Box–Behnken design test was established [ 27 , 28 , 29 , 30 ]. Table 4 presents the factor and level table of this experiment, while Table 5 displays the complete test table.…”

“…As the power level increases or the incidence diameter decreases, the energy density increases considerably, giving rise to the keyhole, which is deeply penetrating, causing narrow HAZ and low distortion in the parts. This mode allows welding of a wider range of materials and thicknesses, higher speeds and better performance and productivity [15], but larger defects (Figure 4) [16].…”

“…In addition, the average power involved achieves higher penetrations than in the continuous mode [ 7 , 8 , 9 ], allowing its application with small and economical apparatus. Furthermore, its accurate energy control permits delivering different pulse shapes to improve depth penetration, reduce defects, and join dissimilar materials [ 8 , 9 , 10 , 11 , 12 ]. In terms of the mechanical impact of the process in the FZ, its application on a St37 carbon steel alloy increased the hardness up to 200 HV [ 2 ].…”
