Effect of Probiotic “L.Reuteri” Association on the Reduction of Serum Bilirubin in Neonatal Jaundice

Abstract: Objective: Evaluate the effect of probiotics association in reducing the total bilirubin level in the serum of neonates with jaundice. Methods: 69 neonates with indirect hyperbilirubinemia were divided randomly into two groups: control and treatment. The control group was treated using phototherapy and the treatment group was treated using phototherapy plus L.Reuteri probiotic. Inclusion criteria: all term newborns admitted for phototherapy for unconjugated hyperbilirubinemia. Exclusion criteria: septic or ill… Show more

“…12 Though phototherapy is in practice for more than 50 years, its complications predominantly hypocalcemia put a limit to its prolonged use 12,13 . Therefore measures which can reduce the length of phototherapy are hot focus of research [4][5][6][7] . Recent studies claimed that probiotics supplementation of jaundiced neonates significantly reduced the mean duration of phototherapy and advocated its preferred use in future practice 6,7 .…”

“…Therefore measures which can reduce the length of phototherapy are hot focus of research [4][5][6][7] . Recent studies claimed that probiotics supplementation of jaundiced neonates significantly reduced the mean duration of phototherapy and advocated its preferred use in future practice 6,7 . However, there was controversy in the existing literature [8][9][10] while there was no such local published material which necessitated the present study.…”

“…Jaundice is one of the most commonly encountered symptoms during the neonatal period and one of the leading causes of admissions in newborn nurseries throughout the world 2) . Jaundice in newborns occurs due to high levels of unconjugated bilirubin in the blood that causes by ABO/Rhesus incompatibility, G6PD deficiency, infections, prematurity, and metabolic disorders 3) . The etiology of neonatal hyperbilirubinemia is multifactorial, such as physiological factors, isoimmunization, and environmental factors.…”

“…7 However, it can also cause some undesirable effects in newborns such as hyperthermia, erythematous rashes, burns, and diarrhea if the treatment is prolonged. 8 Extreme levels of bilirubin in the body can cause kernicterus or even death. If bilirubin levels are not reduced with phototherapy, exchange transfusion is the treatment for severe hyperbilirubinemia in order to prevent kernicterus.…”
