Effect of Printing Direction on the Accuracy of 3D-Printed Dentures Using Stereolithography Technology

Abstract: This study evaluated the effects of the differences in the printing directions of stereolithography (SLA) three-dimensional (3D)-printed dentures on accuracy (trueness and precision). The maxillary denture was designed using computer-aided design (CAD) software with an STL file (master data) as the output. Three different printing directions (0°, 45°, and 90°) were used. Photopolymer resin was 3D-printed (n = 6/group). After scanning all dentures, the scanning data were saved/output as STL files (experimental … Show more

“…Hada et al investigated the accuracy of SLA-printed dentures using transparent material (Clear, Formlabs, Somerville, MA, USA) and a Form 2 printer (Formlabs, Somerville, USA) with 100 µm layer thickness and reported the 45° orientation to provide the superior trueness [ 24 ]. It must be stressed that this material is not verified by the manufacturer for denture base fabrication nor for dental applications.…”

“…However, no clinical report can be found regarding the utilization of SLA for manufacturing complete dentures in a digital workflow. The study of Hada et al investigated the influence of the build angle on the accuracy of stereolithographically printed bases [ 24 ]. It must be emphasized that the material used in this study was transparent and not specified by the manufacturer for denture base fabrication.…”

“…To place as many models as possible, they are often arranged vertically. The staircase effect that is caused by printing in layers appears different depending on the orientation on the platform and affects the surface quality [ 19 ]. More knowledge is needed about the impact of this printing parameter on the accuracy.…”

“…Structures within a polymer object can be orientated either along the Z -axis or along the X , Y -plane. An orientation along the Z -axis was shown to be favorable for achieving a higher resolution in micron-scale 3D printing, depending on the printer’s resolution and the layer thickness [ 20 , 143 ].…”
