Effect of Pretreatments on bioremoval of metals and subsequent exposure to simulated gastrointestinal conditions

Abstract: Water contamination with heavy metals is increased due to environmental contaminants. Arsenic, cadmium, mer-cury, and lead are well-known toxic heavy metals for humans. Lactobacillus acidophilus is an ideal absorbent for the removal of metals from drinking water. In this study, the ability of treated and untreated L. acidophilus ATCC 4356 to remove four heavy metals, simultaneously, from multi-metallic contaminated water in 24 h was investigated. In addition, the stability of the bacteria–metal complexes was e… Show more

“…However, after simulated small intestinal exposure, bioremoval was significantly enhanced compared with stomach juice and initial concentration in both NG and SMG. The releasement of Pb in gastric juice and rebinding in small intestinal conditions was similar to Mirmahdi et al (2022) andZoghi et al (2022) studies by L. acidophilus in NG. As shown in Figure 3, after Cd absorption during the first 24 h, small amount of Cd dissociated from S. cerevisiae after stomach juice exposure in SMG and NG.…”

“…World Health Organization (WHO) guidelines establish permissible Hg, Pb, Cd, and As levels in drinking water at 6, 10, 3, and 10 g L −1 (Khosravi‐Darani et al., 2021 ). Due to their high toxicity and destructive effects, removing them is on the research agenda (Feng et al., 2022 ; Khosravi‐Darani et al., 2021 ; Zoghi et al., 2022 ).…”

“…In recent decades, population growth and industrial development have led to the spread of water pollution due to the discharge of all kinds of urban, leachate from land lls, industrial, agricultural sewage and limiting the country's usable water resources (Luo et al, 2022;Mohebbi et al, 2013;Zoghi et al, 2022). On the other hand, the average precipitation in Iran is very low (233 mm) (Sorkhabi, 2021), so the control of water resources and their optimal use are very high priorities.…”

“…The solubility of Hg in lipids is high and can easily enter the cells. In addition, Hg can be distributed in the brain and kidneys and easily transferred to the fetus through the placenta (Hyman 2004 ; Zoghi et al 2022 ). Galena mineral (PbS) exists in the natural composition of the earth's crust.…”
