Effect of prestroke antiplatelets use on first-ever ischaemic stroke severity and early outcome

Abstract: Our findings provide further evidence supporting modest benefit of AP therapy on the course and outcome of first-ever ischaemic stroke. Further large studies are needed to confirm this effect.

“…In conclusion, our findings point at a potential effect of antiplatelet usage upon clot composition within the intracranial artery. This could explain previously observed favorable effects of antiplatelets on stroke severity and varying success of recanalization efforts [ 20 , 21 ].…”

“…To overcome an imbalance of clinical background between those with and without antiplatelet treatment, some researchers have used multivariate analysis [2,13,23], particularly in using propensity score matching [3,12]. Again, there has been no previous study that targeted patients with a prior history of stroke, i.e., secondary stroke prevention.…”

“…Antiplatelet agents have well-established effectiveness in the secondary prevention of ischemic stroke, and there is evidence that prior antiplatelet use is associated with a reduction of stroke severity in patients with rst-ever ischemic stroke [1][2][3]. It has been controversial, however, as to whether preceding treatment with antiplatelet agents reduces the severity of recurrent ischemic stroke [4][5][6].…”
