The aim of this study was to determine the factors affecting mastitis cases and to estimate the correlations of somatic cell count (SCC) with milk yield in Holstein cows. The study was conducted in two private dairy farms in Hódmezõvásárhely, South-Hungary. A total of 882 Holstein cows were tested by SCC, fat and protein contents of milk monthly intervals. To test milk SCC and components, two groups were designed, and to examine effect of parity on first mastitis day (FMD) and total mastitis cases (TMC), four groups were divided. It was noted that higher SCC caused to higher TMC. While cows had higher protein content exposed to higher FMD and TMC, cows had lower daily milk yield (DMY) had higher values by mastitis case parameters. In parity evaluation, only primiparous cows had statistically lower TMC. The cows with lower SCC were found in advance in change of milk yield (CMY) up to 6.858±0.947 kg. A negative correlation coefficient was estimated between SCC and DMY. Finally, monitoring SCC of milk is offered to prevent milk production losses and new mastitis occurrences in the herds.

In this review paper, hygienic procedures before, during and after cow milking are discussed. The procedures for maintaining hygienic udders before and after milking, as well as maintaining the hygiene of milking units are described. The description includes the maintenance of milker's hand hygiene, udder disinfection and udder disinfection after milking. It is pointed out that these milking procedures should be carried out in a clean environment and without any disturbance to cows. In addition, the need to control the implementation of these hygiene measures is emphasized. A proper way of carrying out the hygienic procedures essentially contributes to reduction of the number of microorganisms and the number of somatic cells in milk, the frequency of occurrence of mastitis, which significantly affects quality of milk and health of milking cows.

Background: Establishment of scientific disinfection measures in domestic poultry farms and live-poultry markets (LPMs) are critical to prevent the spread of H7N9 subtype avian influenza that outbreaks in poultry and infection in humans. The current study was aimed to evaluate the efficacy of four common disinfectants to inactivate H7N9 subtype avian influenza virus (AIV). Methods: According to the disinfection technical specification, the average inactivation logarithmic values of four disinfectants against the epidemic H7N9 subtype AIV, including deciquam solution, glutaral and benzalkonium bromide solution, sodium dichloroisocyanurate powder, and peroxyacetic acid solution, were systematically evaluated. Result: Our data showed that incubation of 0.005% (w/v) deciquam solution for 30 min contact time, or 0.05% (v/v) glutaral and benzalkonium bromide solution for 10 min, or 0.24 g/L sodium dichloroisocyanurate powder for 30 min, or 0.05% (v/v) peroxyacetic acid solution for 10 min, can completely inactivate H7N9 subtype AIV. These results suggested that glutaral and benzalkonium bromide solution as well as peroxyacetic acid solution at recommended concentrations can be effectively used to cut off the spread of H7N9 subtype AIV in poultry farms and LPMs, however, deciquam solution and sodium dichloroisocyanurate powder need to increase their working concentration.
