Effect of Premature Rupture of Membranes on Induction of Labor: A Historical Cohort Study

Abstract: Objective The aim of this study was to assess the influence of premature rupture of membranes (PROM) on the induction of labor. Material and Method This historical cohort study analyzed 1861 inductions of labor at term using misoprostol which occurred between 2010 and 2015. Exclusion criteria included intrauterine fetal death, previous cesarean section, and fetal structural or chromosomal anomalies. Induction of labor for PROM (PROM group) was compared to induction for other indications (no-PROM group); the pr… Show more

“…Protracted labor (longer than 48 h) occurred in only 4.8% as the incidence of pre‐delivery oxytocin was significantly lower (29%) compared to OM. These efficiency improvements in the MVI group were consistent in both nulliparous and parous women even though PROM was one of the most frequent indications for labor induction in the OM group which actually should lead to a shorter induction‐to‐delivery interval . Furthermore, the MVI group had a significant higher BMI than the OM group which additionally should lead to a longer time until delivery.…”

“…Strengths of this study are its high number of included cases and the stratification for parity which is often missing in other trials. Cases with prelabour rupture of membranes were excluded since it influences the outcome of labour induction [30].…”

“…Although this study is limited due its retrospective design, it nevertheless has some advantages compared to other studies. The groups in our study had clearly identifiable profiles, and cases of premature rupture of membranes or with a history of caesarean section were excluded as these factors significantly affect the success of labour induction 17 . Moreover, it again became clear that parity has a significant impact on several factors 18 .…”
