Effect of Pregnancy on Performance of a Standardized Physical Fitness Test

Abstract: At 6 months postpartum, active duty women have decreased muscular and cardiovascular fitness, and have not yet regained prepregnancy weight. These changes put women at high risk for failing the PFA. These changes resolve by the second postpartum PFA. Women above the age of 30 and those who develop gestational diabetes or anemia during pregnancy are at risk for poor postpartum fitness. The Navy should consider extending the time allowed for women to meet PFA standards postpartum and develop a program to monitor… Show more

“…It is well known that hyperglycaemia can also occur during acute stress of psychoemotional origin. In this case, it is clear that the reason for hyperglycaemia is to not eliminate the existing metabolic energy-defect state but to prevent its development [2,30,36]. It is clear that in this situation, the primary trigger that activates the stress reaction is not the presence of a metabolic defect but that of a subjective psychomental stimulus.…”

“…It should be emphasized that the basic therapeutic goal of diabetes treatment is the achievement of near normoglycaemia, which counteracts the glucose toxicity mechanism that induces continuous, progressive metabolic deterioration. Notably, this intervention can be considered a causal treatment only for patients with type 1 diabetes, where the basic pathogenetic factor is insulin deficiency [36,39]. In all other types of diabetes, the principal pathophysiological mechanism is associated either with primary insulin resistance or primary mitochondrial dysfunction.…”

“…A reduction in physical fitness15–18 and an increased risk of injury and illness19 during the 6–12 month postpartum period compared with prepregnancy have been demonstrated in active-duty US Army, Air Force and Navy women. Not surprisingly, 75% of a cohort of 109 US military active-duty women had not regained full functional status, assessed using the Inventory of Functional Status After Childbirth, which measures readiness to assume infant care and to resume self-care, household, social/community and occupational activities when they returned to active duty, with downgraded physical training, at 6 weeks postpartum, and 40% still displayed symptoms of postpartum depression and anxiety 20…”

“…Through optimizing the database management mode, output the key physical fitness index system, and feedback to the coach to formulate the corresponding training program, thereby improving the training efficiency and quality of athletes. For the development of physical fitness testing system, Miller et al [8] developed an RFID system for aerobic cardiovascular endurance running and a 6-minute walking test, which is a common tracking and tracking technology and plays an important role in the field of sports testing. Tseng et al [9] have studied a comprehensive physical fitness testing system for the elderly.…”
