Effect of pre-swirl nozzle closure modes on unsteady flow and heat transfer characteristics in a pre-swirl system of aero-engine

Abstract: The pre-swirl system is of great importance for temperature drop and cooling air supply. This study aims to investigate the influencing mechanism of heat transfer, nonuniform thermodynamic characteristics, and cooling air supply sensitivity in a pre-swirl system by the application of the flow control method of the pre-swirl nozzle. A novel test rig was proposed to actively control the supplied cooling air mass flow rate by three adjustable pre-swirl nozzles. Then, the transient problem of the pre-swirl system … Show more

“…A portion of the secondary flow from the combustor is used to prevent hot gas ingestion into the upstream wheel space of the HP turbine stage, and its reminder is conducted on the pre-swirl system to make the flow appropriate to cool the HP turbine blade. 17 Pre-swirl systems can be divided into two categories: direct-transfer (large radius) pre-swirl systems and cover-plate (small radius) pre-swirl systems. 18 As shown in Figure 5(a), the air flows into the pre-swirl cavity after being pre-swirled by the nozzle.…”

“…For pre-swirl nozzles, the swirl ratio can characterize the pre-swirl velocity and be used to evaluate temperature drop [9]. Furthermore, Shen et al [28] demonstrated that the swirl ratio in a rotating cavity is proportional to temperature rise.…”

“…Because of the compact layout and the requirement for high pressures, the airflow in the radial pre-swirl system is structured to flow from a low radius to a high radius. In previous studies, the effect of the geometrical parameters of the pre-swirl nozzle was investigated to improve its adiabatic effectiveness and discharge coefficient [9][10][11]. To optimize the flow structure further, Lee et al [7] proposed vane-shaped pre-swirl nozzles and performed a parameter sensitivity analysis.…”

“…Currently, research on the contact characteristics between rough surfaces mainly focuses on heat transfer and dynamics [6]. Aerodynamic and thermodynamic performances are of importance for safe engine operation [7][8][9]. Therefore, the key to the analysis of discontinuous contact surfaces lies in the study of contact stiffness and thermal resistance on these two surfaces.…”
