Objective: This study was conducted to evaluate the effect of resin-based material, repeated preheating and light curing distance on flexural strength and degree of conversion. Materials and Methods:A total of 220 specimens were used in this study. One-hundred sixty rectangular specimens measuring 12mm x 2 mm x 2mm were dedicated for flexural strength (FS) using three-point bending test. Sixty disc-shaped specimens measuring 4mm x 2mm were dedicated for degree of conversion (DC) using ATR-FTIR spectrophotometer. Specimens were divided into two main groups according to material used; SPRG-containing Beautifil II LS and non-SPRG containing Filtek™ Z250 XT. Each group was subdivided into five subgroups according to the number of preheating cycles to which the syringe was exposed: no preheating, one, five, ten, or fifteen cycles of preheating. Then, each subgroup was further subdivided according to light curing distance (0mm and 10mm). Specimens were stored for 24 hours then subjected to the corresponding testing method (FS n=8, DC n=3). Data was statistically analyzed using three-way ANOVA followed by Tukey's post hoc test.Results: Nanohybrid composite recorded significantly higher FS (p<0.001). Also, a significant effect on FS was revealed for preheating (p=0.001), light curing distance (p=0.038), and the interaction between preheating and distance (p=0.027). Meanwhile, giomer recorded significantly higher DC (p<0.001). All other variables and their interactions were non-significant. Conclusion1. Material formulation has a significant effect on polymerization efficiency reflected in FS and DC.2. Preheating and light curing distance had a significant effect on FS, but not on DC.Clinical Relevance: Deeply situated margins require meticulous attention and care from the clinician in order to guarantee seal, adaptation, optimum cure and ultimately restoration success.

Background Resin-based composites stand as widely employed restorative materials in the field of dentistry, owing to their superior esthetic and physicochemical properties. Nevertheless, a notable limitation of these composites is the occurrence of polymerization shrinkage, leading to stress at the interface of tooth restoration. Over time, this phenomenon may result in marginal leakage and secondary caries, thereby causing restoration failure. Objectives Our study aimed to conduct a comparative evaluation of voids, internal adaptation, and polymerization shrinkage in Class II preheated composite restorations [5 seconds vs. 20 seconds] and composites at room temperature [20 seconds], utilizing Nano CT analysis. Methods Cylindrical Class II cavities were prepared on both mesial and distal sides of Fifteen freshly extracted human maxillary premolar teeth. The specimens were then randomly allocated into three groups and restored as follows: Group 1 [Filtek Supreme XT at room temperature, photocured for 20 seconds], Group 2 [Filtek Supreme XT composite preheated to 68°C in Compex HD, photocured for 20 seconds], and Group 3 [Filtek Supreme XT composite preheated to 68°C in Compex HD, photocured for 5 seconds]. Nano CT was employed for the qualitative assessment of the samples. Statistical analysis involved the Shapiro-Wilkins test, ONE WAY ANOVA test, followed by Tukey’s HSD Post hoc analysis. Results Significantly improved outcomes were observed in preheated composite groups, irrespective of the photo curing time, when compared to the room temperature composite group in terms of polymerization shrinkage. The room temperature composite group exhibited the highest void volume and frequency among the investigated groups. Conclusions Within the constraints of the study, it can be deduced that preheating at 68°C and light curing for 5 seconds enhance internal adaptation and reduce the incidence of voids in composite restoration. Clinicians should be informed about clinical techniques that mitigate shrinkage stress to improve the durability of composite restorations. Objetivo: Avaliar a influência do tratamento de superfície na resistência à flexão biaxial e alterações na superfície por meio de MEV. Métodos: Foram utilizados 54 discos cerâmicos de blocos CAD/CAM feldspática reforçada por leucita (IPS Empress Cad Cerec, Ivoclar Vivadent). Os discos foram divididos em três grupos (n=18), de acordo com o tratamento de superfície: àcido hidrofluorídrico 5% 20s e silano (HF20); àcido hidrofluorídrico 5% 60s e silano (HF60) e primer cerâmico autocondicionante (P). As amostras foram cimentadas em disco de resina epóxi com cimento resinoso dual, e submetidas à fadiga mecânica (1,2 x 106 ciclos, 50N, 3,8 Hz) e ao teste de flexão biaxial (1 mm/min; 1.000 Kgf). Resultados: Para HF20, o resultado foi estatisticamente superior ao HF60 (p < 0,001); P se mostrou similar aos demais. O Weibull indicou que o tratamento de maior confiabilidade foi o P. As microscopias obtidas nos grupos HF evidenciaram o aumento de dissolução de matriz vítrea e a exposição dos demais conteúdos. Já para o grupo P, observa-se uma homogeneidade de superfície maior. Conclusão: O tipo de tratamento de superfície interfere na resistência da cerâmica reforçada com leucita quando diferentes tempos de condicionamento são utilizados.
