Effect of poultry manure and urea-n on flowering occurrence and leaf Productivity of amaranthus cruentus

Abstract: A field experiment was conducted during the dry season (December -March) in 2005 and 2006. To test the effect of poultry manure (PM) and urea -N on flower initiation and leaf yield of Amaranthus cruentus. Plants fertilized with sole poultry manure at 15 tonnes/ha were significantly (p = 0.05) tallest (90.6cm), while application of a mixture of 30 kg urea-N/ha and 15 tones/ha of poultry manure produced the higher number of leaves per plant (81.7), the largest leaf area (203.0 cm 2 ), highest number of branch… Show more

“…This influence on growth by NPK and PM possibly resulted in higher yield than in the control. This result corroborates those of [4,20,21] on growth of Amaranthus and that of [22] on yield of Amaranths. The higher protein in the Amaranthus species grown with NPK and PM is consistent with the result of [22].…”

“…The use of inorganic fertilizer to increase yield has been found to be effective only within few years, demanding consistent use on long-term basis [3]. The hazardous environmental consequences and high cost of inorganic fertilizers make them not only undesirable but also uneconomical and out of reach of the poor farmers who still dominate the Nigerian agricultural sector [4]. This has led to increased use of organic manure, a readily available alternative, which proves more environmentally friendly.…”

“…The use of mineral fertilizers to increase yield has been found to be effective only within few years, demanding consistent use on long term basis (Ojeniyi et al, 2009). The hazardous environmental consequences and high cost of mineral fertilizers make itundesirable but also uneconomical and out of reach of the poor farmers who still dominate in the Egyptian agriculture sector (Shiyam and Binang, 2011). This are led to increase use of organic manure, a readily available alternative, to be more environmentally friend.…”

“…The hazardous environmental consequences and high cost of inorganic fertilizers make them not only undesirable but also uneconomical and out of reach for the poor smallholder farmers who still dominate the Nigerian agricultural food production space (Shiyam and Binang, 2011). This has led to the increased use of organic manure, a readily available alternative, which proves to be more environmentally friendly, but the mineralization of these organic manure/ materials is slow, thereby resulting in a problem with the supply of nitrogen due to the high demand by the plant.…”
