Effect of potato contact parameters on seed metering performance using discrete element method

Abstract: Aim of study: To study the effect of potato surface with or without sandy loam soil on seed metering performance, we investigated the motion behaviour of the potato seed particles during the seed metering process using a self-designed across-bridge metering device by discrete element method (DEM). Area of study: Tonganyi Town, Dingxi, Gansu, China Material and methods: First, the contact characteristics of potatoes were measured using some novel devices. Second, simulations were performed under the same experi… Show more

“…During the test, the partition at the funnel outlet was removed, allowing the pellets to fall and form a pellet pile naturally. Pictures of the pellet pile were taken along the X and Y directions, as shown in Figure 1 (Shi et al., 2019). The image's edge contour was obtained using Python to process the image with Gaussian filtering to remove noise points, histogram homogenization, binarization threshold segmentation, expansion, filling internal holes, edge detection by the Canny operator, etc.…”

“…where M is missed seeding index; Q is the qualified index; N 1 is the number of missed seeding; N 2 is the qualified number; N is the theoretical seeding numbers. The theoretical spacing is x (40-50 mm), and the distance between adjacent seeds on the conveyor belt is L. When 0.5x < L < 1.5x, it is qualified, and where L > 1.5x [22], it is missed seeding.…”

“…Simulation tests of the hole-seeding process were conducted based on MBD-DEM. The necessary material and contact parameters for the simulation model in the seed discharge process were obtained by reviewing the literature, as shown in Tables 2 and 3 [27,28]. After establishing a simplified model for hole-seeding simulation [29], the simulation parameters were set to generate a total of 1000 corn grains, with each type generated at a rate of 300 grains/s, as depicted in Figure 11a.…”
