Effect of Potassium Dichromate on Properties and Biodegradation of Gum Arabic Based Bioplastic Membranes

Abstract: Gum Arabic (GA) collected from Acacia senegal trees was used with polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) to prepare of a series of biodegradable membranes doped and non-doped with potassium dichromate (K 2 Cr 2 O 7 ). Adding the K 2 Cr 2 O 7 to the GA/PVA blends slightly decreased their crystallinity index (CI) by about 2 %. Increasing the PVA concentration in the chromated GA/PVA blends was responsible for increasing the CI. Adding the K 2 Cr 2 O 7 to the pure GA solution modified its differential thermal behavior whereby t… Show more

“…Moreover, a common trend was registered between the NDB products fabricated in the current investigation and the ADB synthesized by Hindi et al [98] and Hindi and Albureikan [57]. Accordingly, the nano-dehydration invention did not affect the parent's ability to biodegrade the bioplastic membranous product.…”

“…The FTIR for the NDB used in the current work and the ADB created by Hindi et al [98] have main functional groups that share chemical characteristics, accord-ing to the comparison. As a result, the chemical components of the bioplastic products have been preserved by the use of innovative casting blends, nano-dehydration, and membrane peeling.…”

“…The peak at 854.80 cm −1 was assigned to a methene vibration [24]. The FTIR spectra of pure GA are dominated by OH stretching vibrations at 3272.57 cm −1 [25]. The C-H stretching modes are riding over the broad peak at 2913.77 cm −1 [26].…”

“…The crystallinity index (CI) was computed by dividing the diffractogram area of crystalline cellulose by the entire area of the original diffractogram after smoothing the resulting crystalline peaks from the diffraction intensity profiles. Using Microsoft Excel (USA), the area under the curve was calculated by adding adjacent trapezoids [ 98 , 99 , 100 , 101 , 102 , 103 ].…”

“…Microbial biodegradation was assessed to investigate the microbes’ capacity to break down the buildup of bioplastic in soil. Upon calculating the percentage of biodegradation (weight loss), counting the microbe population isolated from the surfaces of bioplastic sheets, and evaluating the various morphological changes in these surfaces as a result of degradation, it was possible to determine the amount of biodegradation [ 98 , 99 ].…”
