Ultra-thick offshore steel, known for its high strength, high toughness, and corrosion resistance, is commonly used in marine platforms and ship components. However, when offshore steel is in service for an extended period under conditions of high pressure, extreme cold, and high-frequency impact loads, the weld joints are prone to fatigue failure or even fractures. Addressing these issues, this study designed a narrow-gap laser wire filling welding process and successfully welded a 100-mm new type of ultra-thick offshore steel. Using finite element simulation, EBSD testing, SEM analysis, and impact experiments, this study investigates the weld’s microstructure, impact toughness, and fracture mechanisms. The research found that at −80 °C, the welded joint exhibited good impact toughness (>80 J), with the impact absorption energy on the surface of the weld being 217.7 J, similar to that of the base material (225.3 J), and the fracture mechanism was primarily a ductile fracture. The impact absorption energy in the core of the weld was 103.7 J, with the fracture mechanism mainly being a brittle fracture. The EBSD results indicated that due to the influence of the welding thermal cycle and the cooling effect of the narrow-gap process, the grains gradually coarsened from the surface of the welded plate to the core of the weld, which was the main reason for the decreased impact toughness at the joint core. This study demonstrates the feasibility of using narrow-gap laser wire filling welding for 100-mm new type ultra-thick offshore steel and provides a new approach for the joining of ultra-thick steel plates.

In this review paper, dissimilar welding between Inconel and austenitic stainless steel along with its application has been outlined for high-temperature applications. The mechanical and microstructural behavior of this dissimilar joint has been summarized thoroughly in this article. Dissimilar welding of Inconel alloys and stainless steel (SS) has massive demand in high temperature and high corrosive applications industries. Austenitic stainless steel contains 16-26% of Cr and 6-12% of Ni elements showing FCC structures have good weldability and high corrosion resistance. Austenitic stainless steel such as 304, 316l, 304H, etc., containing austenite microstructure used in high-temperature applications like power plants, heat exchangers, heating elements, aircraft, and others. In addition, Ni-based Inconel alloys show high-temperature strength and corrosion resistance and are frequently used in high-temperature applications. Ni-based Inconel 718 alloy possesses excellent strength, corrosion resistance and creep resistance at high temperatures are frequently used in combustion chambers, power plants and turbine blades ap/plications. Inconel alloyed by elements Ti, Al and Nb attain strength by forming phases such as ?/-Ni3(-Ti, Al), ?//-Ni3Nb, and carbides such as MC and M23C6, nitrides, laves phase. The GTA dissimilar welding between expensive Inconel and cheaper stainless steel is successfully used in nuclear power plants. The dissimilarity in melting point, chemical composition, thermal, mechanical, and other properties between these materials make welding challengeable. This review paper focused on problems related to dissimilar welding like forming unmixed zone, elemental segregation, formation of laves phase, sensitization, microfissuring, and solidification cracking.

Microstructure and Mechanical Properties of Modern 11%Cr Heat-Resistant Steel Weld Joints

In addition to good high-temperature creep resistance and adequate heat resistance, steels for the power industry must have, among other things, good weldability. Weldability of such steels is one of the criteria determining whether or not the material is suitable for applications in the power industry. Therefore, when materials such as martensitic steel Thor 115 (T115) are introduced into the modern power industry, the quality and properties of welded joints must be assessed. The paper presents the results of metallographic and mechanical investigations of T115 martensitic steel welded joints. The analysis was carried out on joints welded with two filler metals: WCrMo91 (No. 1) and EPRI P87 (No. 2). The scope of the investigations included: microstructural investigations carried out using optical, scanning and transmission electron microscopy and mechanical testing, i.e., Vickers microhardness and hardness measurement, static tensile test and impact test. The macro- and microstructural investigations revealed correct structure of the weld, without welding imperfections. The microstructural investigations of joint No. 1 revealed a typical structure of this type of joint, i.e., the martensitic structure with numerous precipitates, while in joint No. 2, the so-called Nernst’s layers and δ-ferrite patches were observed in the weld fusion zone as well as the heat affected zone (HAZ). The mechanical properties of the test joints met the requirements for the base material. A slight influence of the δ-ferrite patch on the strength properties of joint No. 2 was observed, and its negative effect on the impact energy of HAZ was visible.
