Effect of Positive and Negative Corona Discharge Field on Vigor of Millet Seeds

Abstract: To investigate the effects of corona discharge field treatment of different electric field strength with the different polarities on the vigor of millet seeds, the positive and negative corona discharge fields generated with arc-shaped prick electrodes and plate electrodes are different for millet seeds respectively. The treatment voltage was (2 × n kV, n = 1, 2.. .10) and the time treated was 2 min. The results showed that after treatment by the corona discharge field, the germination potential, germination r… Show more

“…Lower seed conductivity and higher seed viability. This can be verified in references 32 , 35 , where the highest seed viability was observed when the output voltage was 12 kV; However, in references 36 , 37 the highest seed viability was observed when the output voltage was 16 kV; This manuscript and references 32 , 35 were studied for chili seeds and rice seeds, and the optimum output voltages were similar for seeds of similar size; References 36 , 37 were studied on cotton seeds, which are larger and have a higher optimum output voltage than chili seeds and rice seeds compared to chili seeds and rice seeds. It can be seen that the optimal output voltage shows a positive correlation with the seed size.…”

“…Lower seed conductivity and higher seed viability. Under high-voltage electrostatic polarisation conditions, the selective semi-permeability of the cell membrane is altered, as can be verified in references 32 34 ; However, the effects of different high-voltage electrostatic polarisation modes on the selective semi-permeability of cell membranes have rarely been reported. The mechanism by which the negative output voltage acts on the cell membrane and stimulates the restoration of the selective semi-permeability function of the cell membrane is not clear.…”

“…During seed germination [11,12] , water plays an important role in maintaining the functioning and activity of seeds [13] . The state and distribution of water can affect the catalytic functions of various enzymes [14,15] , which in turn can alter the metabolic rates of biological macromolecules, such as carbohydrates, starch, lipids, and proteins, consequently [16] , affecting seed germination and emergence rates [17][18][19][20][21] . Research on the patterns of changes in the internal enzymes of seeds treated with HV-PEF has been conducted extensively and has produced remarkable results.…”

“…However, the pre-hydration treatment of Cyanus segetum seeds can reduce EC and improve germination [35], and it is believed that pre-hydration is conducive to the metabolic repair, DNA repair, and membrane repair of seeds before germination [35,41]. In this study, PEF treatment significantly reduced the conductivity of Scutellaria baicalensis seeds, while the GP increased, indicating that the appropriate electric field treatment can reduce the permeability of the cell membrane [42] and promote membrane repair during imbibition before germination. In the stage of imbibition before germination, there was also a negative correlation between seed conductivity and germination activity.…”
