Effect of Polypropylene Fibres on the Thermal Conductivity of Lightweight Foamed Concrete

Abstract: With the reduction in the permanent load on the structure and excellent insulation properties, the lightweight foamed concrete is a potential thermal insulating building material to counter the urban heat island effect, which increases the temperature of urban areas due to the concentration of infrastructures constructed using conventional concrete that absorbs the solar radiation. The lightweight foamed concrete whose dry density ranges from 400 kg/m3 to 1600 kg/m3, has lower thermal conductivity compared to … Show more

“…Previous research indicated that relatively high thermal conductivity reduction with polypropylene, as compared to AR-glass, kenaf, steel and oil palm fibres [ 36 ] and steel fibres would not likely increase the concrete thermal conductivity [ 214 ]. Other findings also showed the polypropylene fibres reduced concrete thermal conductivity [ 132 ].…”

“…Steel, in the shape of steel bars, is known to be strong in tension, has been used to reinforce the concrete, such that reinforced concrete withstands the tension loads. But with the steel bar reinforcement, the weight of structural element increases thus exerting more self-weight or dead load on the structure (Jhatial et al, 2018). To reduce the dead load, Fibre Reinforced Concrete (FRC) was introduced.…”

“…Jhatial et al, [12] studied the effect of PP fibres on the compressive strength and thermal conductivity of 1600 kg/m 3 density lightweight foamed concrete. Three percentages of PP fibres, i.e., 0.20%, 0.25% and 0.30% were added into the foamed concrete and compared with control sample.…”
