Effect of poly lactic acid trays on the optical and thermal properties of recycled poly (ethylene terephthalate)

Abstract: To progress towards a more sustainable plastic system, multiple interventions are required, including the decoupling from fossil feedstock. Biobased plastics therefore have to be integrated in plastic waste management systems. This should, however, not hamper the performance of current recycling systems. Several studies have previously suggested that the uptake of poly lactic acid (PLA) in this system would endanger poly (ethylene terephthalate) (PET) recycling. This study reports the estimated concentration o… Show more

“…Nevertheless, upon blending with PET or PE, r-PLA has been accepted by customers, as it has shown a good performance in the extrusion of monofilaments. This statement is further supported by several studies demonstrating that low percentages of (recycled) PLA are miscible with r-PET and certain recycled polyolefins, and do not negatively affect the performance of these materials [366][367][368][369].…”

“…Interesting data on the biodegradation of aliphatic-aromatic copolyesters and their ecotoxicology have also been published [19]. Derivatives of polylactic acid are also considered for packaging [20]. In the context of food packaging, a methodology for scoring and comparing environmental effects has also been developed [21].…”

“…Recently, the research interest in the field of flexible packaging recycling has rapidly grown, highlighting the importance of advancing packaging sustainability [34][35][36][37][38][39]. The work is mainly focused on either the "design for" recycling (invention of novel packaging films) [40][41][42][43][44] or "design from" recycling (recycling possibilities [45] and recyclate application) [46][47][48][49] aspects but does not connect the topics for a holistic overview.…”
