Vortices evolutions in oil pockets of machine tools were investigated by using a particle image velocimetry (PIV) system and numerical simulations. The influences of Reynolds number (Re), aspect ratio of pocket depth‐to‐nozzle radius (e), and clearance height (h) on the vortices characteristics were studied. Up to three interacting vortices appear, namely, the primary vortex, the secondary vortex, and the tertiary vortex. The vortices evolve in a complex manner. The primary vortex appears at 15 < Re < 1610 and dominates the whole pocket flow at relatively high Re. The secondary vortex appears at Re > 210. The vortices size increases with e increasing. Moreover, the vortices detachment and reattachment positions were also been investigated. The vortices structures have significant influences on the distributions of pressures and wall shear stresses on the upper disc. The results further the understanding of vortices evolutions in oil pockets and will guide engineering applications related to the round pocket flow.

This study presents a new approach, group inching fortification (GIF) method, to deal with multiobjective optimization problems found in various mechanical designs. The GIF method is exemplified by a four-factor porous air bearing design. In the GIF method the initial group of designs in Pareto rank 1 is used as the basis to inch up the formation of Pareto solution set, which is fortified over the search process by uniting superior or non-dominated solutions from base-point exploration moves. In this study, a comparison of the GIF method with genetic algorithm (GA) and hyper-cube dividing method (HDM) for the same air bearing design is presented. The results show that the Pareto solution set obtained by the GIF method has more design selections with a wider coverage (breadth). Equally important, the number of objective-function calls required (179, 736, and 3600 for GIF, HDM, and GA, respectively) in the GIF method is significantly reduced. In this study, the GIF method is suggested to be terminated when all the designs are non-dominated by each other, a criterion which is very difficult to achieve by using the GA and HDM. This study proposes an effective design tool which is easy-to-implement for solving the problems with multiple objectives.

Dust stop seals are widely used in powder and rubber mixing industries.Design of the sealing system requires a continuous supply of pressurised lubricant, which is not recycled because of the risk of contamination. There is also the potential of large volume leakage of oil due to poor sealing, increasing operational costs and necessitating remedial measures to avoid environmental protection. Furthermore, the seal faces are prone to failure in relatively short periods of time due to reduced gap and lubricant leakage. The paper presents an analytical method and numerical predictions based on Reynolds equation under combined hydrodynamic and hydrostatic conditions with the entrant lubricant through hydraulically loaded feedholes. The validity of these methods is ascertained through comparison with a more complex but timeconsuming solution of Navier-Stokes equations. The numerical predictions allow for determining the prevailing tribological contact conditions and assessing its suitability for evaluating the sealing performance of mixing machinery.
