Effect of Plasticizer on the Magnetoelastic Behavior for Magnetic Polyurethane Elastomers

Abstract: Magnetic polyurethane elastomers containing various plasticizers were synthesized, and the effect of plasticizers on the magnetoelastic behavior has been investigated. The storage modulus for magnetic elastomers at 0 mT decreased with plasticizer content, whereas the storage modulus at 500 mT dramatically increased. The increment in the storage modulus by magnetic fields increased with plasticizer content indicating a well-developed chain structure of magnetic particles. It was found that the on-field storage … Show more

“…Researches have been conducted to enhance the mechanical and MR characteristics of MREs by adding non-magnetic fillers as additives to MREs. Different types of non-magnetic fillers include reinforcing agents [ 92 , 93 , 94 , 95 ], plasticizers [ 96 , 97 , 98 ], and crosslink agents [ 99 , 100 ] that are related to the mechanical characteristics of MREs, in addition to the important magnetic fillers to increase MR properties. Mechanical reinforcing agents include carbon nanotube (CNT) [ 92 ], graphene [ 93 ], graphite [ 94 ], and carbon black [ 95 ].…”

“…Addition of small amounts of additives, in the 0.1–15 wt% range, to MR solids causes an improvement in the properties of the materials. The additives can contribute to enhancing the MR effect of MR solids, depending on their quality and quantity . Moreover, additives improve the processing ability and reduce the cost of the materials .…”

“…Lokander and Stenberg introduced phthalate ester‐based plasticizers in 2003 . Later, these plasticizers became the focus of many studies on the preparation of MR elastomers . In the earliest study on phthalate ester‐based plasticizers, diethylhexyl phthalate (DEHP) was used as a plasticizer for nitrile rubber‐based isotropic MR elastomers; the addition of DEHP led to an enhancement in the shear storage modulus of the MR elastomers .…”
