A field experiment was conducted at Noakhali ,Chittagong during the season in 2019, to determine the effect of mulching on cucumber (Cucumis sativus) production where Alavy Green variety was used. The study was laid out in RCBD (Randomized complete block design) method having three replications. The treatment used in this study consists of T1=Black plastic mulching, T2=Water hyacinth mulching, T3=Rice straw mulching, Control= no mulching. The plant showed significant differences after application of various treatments. The maximum average length of vine (113 cm), number of branch per plant (8.33), number of leaves per plant (28.44), number of tendrils per plant (11.52), number of flowers per plant (16.33), number of fruits per plant (9), length of fruit (18 cm), weight of individual fruit (239.67 g) were obtained from T1 treatment (Black plastic mulching) .On the other hand, minimum average length of vine (103.91 cm), number of branch per plant (4.33), number of leaves per plant (22.67), number of tendrils per plant (7.33), number of flowers per plant (12.33), number of fruits per plant (4.33), length of fruit (9 cm), weight of individual fruit (173.67 g) were obtained from T0 control (No mulching). Among organic (Water hyacinth and Rice straw) and inorganic mulches (Black plastic), inorganic mulches gave better performance over organic mulches.

El objetivo del estudio fue evaluar el rendimiento y la calidad de siete genotipos de pepino partenocárpico de tipo mediano (Corinto, Katrina, Macario, Modan, Paraíso, Primavera y 22-20-782), cultivados en condiciones de invernadero en la Estación Experimental Agrícola “Fabio Baudrit Moreno”, en Alajuela, Costa Rica. El cultivo se manejó con fertirrigación en sustrato de fibra de coco, y con poda a un tallo por planta. Los datos muestran una amplia variabilidad entre los genotipos en cuanto a edad al inicio de la floración (17 - 20 días después del trasplante -d.d.t.-), edad al inicio de la cosecha (28 - 30 d.d.t.), longitud del fruto (16,56 - 21,30 cm), diámetro del fruto (42,94 - 54,09 mm), número total de frutos por planta (26,31 - 49,41), peso del fruto (215,41 - 269,89 g), rendimiento comercial (13,66 - 22,66 kg/m2), rendimiento total (18,11 - 28,41 kg/m2) y porcentaje de sólidos solubles totales (2,89 - 3,22 °Brix). En términos generales, los frutos de pepino de primera calidad mostraron mayor longitud, diámetro y porcentaje de sólidos solubles totales que los de segunda calidad y de rechazo. Los genotipos 22-20-782 y Katrina obtuvieron el mayor rendimiento comercial (20,89 y 22,66 kg/m2, respectivamente) y primera calidad (12,48 y 12,49 kg/m2, respectivamente), por lo que se consideran los mejor adaptados a las condiciones en que se desarrolló la investigación; sin embargo, sus frutos son más pequeños (menor longitud, diámetro y peso) en comparación con los de otros genotipos, lo que podría afectar su potencial de comercialización en Costa Rica.

Se evaluaron tres tipos (largo, mediano y pequeño) de pepino, producidos bajo invernadero en condiciones hidropónicas en Alajuela, Costa Rica, para determinar su rendimiento y calidad, tanto a nivel cualitativo (presencia de espinas) como cuantitativo (ocho variables). Los tres tipos de pepino iniciaron cosecha a los 31 días después del trasplante. Los datos muestran una amplia variabilidad entre los tipos de pepino en cuanto a: longitud (18,18 – 33,77 cm), diámetro (43,25 – 49,44 mm) y peso del fruto (232,63 – 463,98 g); número de frutos (18,83 – 37,94) y rendimiento por planta (7847,10 – 8715,74 g); rendimiento por área (20,38 – 22,64 kg/m2); y porcentaje de sólidos solubles totales (3,04 – 3,61 °Brix). El mayor número total de frutos por planta (37,94) y el menor porcentaje de sólidos solubles totales (3,04 °Brix) se obtuvo con el pepino tipo pequeño, mientras que el menor número total de frutos por planta (18,83) y los frutos con el mayor peso (463,98 g) se obtuvieron con el pepino tipo largo. No se presentaron diferencias significativas en el rendimiento total (20,38 – 22,64 kg/m2) ni comercial (16,52 – 18,18 kg/m2) entre los tres tipos de pepino; sin embargo, el rendimiento de frutos de primera calidad fue significativamente superior con los pepinos tipo pequeño y mediano (12,73 – 12,74 kg/m2), por lo que, desde un punto de vista económico, ambos tipos de pepino se consideran los más recomendables bajo las condiciones en que se desarrolló el ensayo.
