Effect of pigmentation on polyurethane/polysiloxane hybrid coatings

Abstract: Rutile TiO 2 was formulated into polyurethane/polysiloxane hybrid coatings in order to investigate the influence of pigmentation on the inorganic phase of the hybrid coatings. Two urethanes were prepared from the isocyanurate of hexane diisocyanate (HDI), alkoxysilane modified HDI, and tetraethyl orthosilicate (TEOS) oligomers, with oligoesters derived from either cyclohexane diacids (CHDA) and 2-butyl-2-ethyl-1,3-propanediol (BEPD) or adipic acid (AA), isophthalic acid (IPA), 1,6-hexanediol (HD), and trimethy… Show more

“…EIS is an established method for the evaluation of the corrosion protection of coatings but can also be used to assess film properties in general . The measurements of the impedance spectra and data analysis were performed with the same procedures as described in our previous article, where we demonstrated that EIS can be used to observe the progress of latex film formation.…”

“…The burnout results of CERTi8 and 10 samples, which contain P-based compounds, show that, as expected, phosphorus actively contributes to thermal degradation, improving thermal stability [20]; in fact, these samples show the highest residue at 800 °C. Moreover, the contribution of TiO2 NPs should be considered, for their high affinity for Si-based matrix [58] and their capacity to act as physical barrier, promoting the formation of a carbonaceous residue [41] but also for their potential detrimental catalyzing effect, which accelerates the combustions process [59]. Sample CERTi5, which has the lowest amount of TiO2 NPs, showed a very low residue after burn-out, despite the presence of TMEOS precursor.…”

“…In a recent report, polysiloxane, tetraethyl orthosilicate oligomers (TEOS oligomers), formulated into urethane coatings in the presence of TiO 2 resulted in the formation of Si O Ti bonding. 8 The resultant interconnection of TiO 2 and urethane linkage via a silane linkage showed improvement in corrosion resistance and adhesion properties. 8 Incorporation of functionalized organic phase and sol-gel phases can eliminate or control phase separation phenomena during mixing and drying, thereby producing finely dispersed precipitated particles or co-continuous morphology.…”
