Effect of phosphorus oxide additives on the color and production conditions of Bi2O3 – SiO2 – P2O5 glass

Abstract: Transparent glass has been obtained in the system Bi 2 O 3 -SiO 2 -P 2 O 5 with molar content 57.1% Bi 2 O 3 , 42.9 -17.1% SiO 2 , and 0 -25.7% P 2 O 5 . It is found that the P 2 O 5 content affects the glassmaking temperature and the glass color. Such glasses are promising for use in photonics and as scintillation materials.

“…The Al 2 O 3 content in two samples (NN 16 and 17) was higher than 14 mol.%; therefore, the thermodynamic properties of these samples obtained by high-temperature mass spectrometry were not taken into further consideration. The glass-forming regions determined in previous studies [1,2] and in the present investigation are in satisfactory agreement, as can be seen from Fig. 2.…”

“…Twenty-five samples among which seven samples belonged to the Bi 2 O 3 -P 2 O 5 system were synthesized for this purpose. The reasons for the choice of the concentration range were as follows: (i) the glass-forming regions in the system under study identified previously [1,2] and (ii) the validity range of Knudsen effusion mass spectrometry for studying vaporization processes and thermodynamic properties. NH 4 H 2 PO 4 , Bi 2 O 3 and SiO 2 with the purity 'pro analysi' were used for the synthesis of the samples in the Bi 2 O 3 -P 2 O 5 -SiO 2 system.…”
