Effect of Phosphorus Levels on Soil Properties and Plant Tissues of Two Nerica Varieties

Abstract: Phosphorus levels in the soil are easily fixed and rendered unavailable to plants even if they are found to be high and therefore, its influence on uptake of other nutrients such as nitrogen, and potassium cannot be overemphasized. In that view, an experiment was set out at KALRO-Mwea to investigate on the effect of phosphorus levels on soil properties and plant tissue nutrient contents of Nerica rice variety. The experiment was laid out in a Randomized Complete Block Design in splitsplit plot arrangement and … Show more

“…This is in line with Mathew et al. (2018), in which there was a reduction in soil pH under the influence of P level treatments. The availability of P was low in highly acidic soil and alkaline soil but was available in the range of 6 to 7 (Ara et al., 2018), which is recommended as optimum for availability and uptake by plants.…”

“…The addition of fertiliser showed a decrease in pH and an increase in EC throughout the study compared to unfertilised ( Fig 1 ). Fertiliser is known for increasing acidification and salts, which are some of its environmental shortcomings [ 43 , 44 ]. The application of biochar and fertiliser mixture had higher pH than the fertiliser application.…”

“…Phosphorus significantly increases branches, leaves, fresh and dry weight per plant in cowpea (Abobatta et al, 2023) at 60 kg P2 O3/ha (Namakka et al, 2017;Kiri et al, 2023). Several studies have shown increased tissue P levels with soil availability of P (Balemi & Negisho, 2012;Mathew et al, 2018;Wieczorek et al, 2022). Phosphorus plays an outstanding function in physiological processes of plants (Kalayu, 2019;Wang et al, 2021;Pan et al, 2022;Jančaitienė et al, 2023).…”
