“…Tannins have astrinction actions, to be able to precipitate proteins of mucosal membranes and skin, and have a hemostatic local action (Costa, 1975). According to Tani (1976Tani ( , 1978 and Esaki et al (1985), tannins suppress gastric secretions, and in a small dose, the astrinction, which is one of the chemical properties of tannins, has been considered mainly local action for the protection of the gastric mucosa in stress-induced gastric lesions in rats. In our experiment, the action of both extracts, when administered intraperitoneally, also prevented acute gastric mucosal injury produced by stressinduced lesions (unpublished observation), revealing not tannins alone may be responsible for the antiulcer activity.…”
