Effect of perioperative hypothermia on surgical site infection in abdominal surgery: A prospective cohort study

Abstract: Aim: To estimate the incidence rates of surgical site infection and identify the independent effect of perioperative hypothermia on the incidence of this type of infection in patients undergoing abdominal surgery. Background: Around the world, surgical site infection is a frequent complication in surgical patients, mainly causing increased morbidity and mortality rates and health service costs.Design: A prospective cohort study. Methods:The 484 patients were recruited from a large private philanthropic hospital… Show more

“…Maintenance of intra-operative normothermia has been associated with improved outcomes. There is strong evidence to suggest that hypothermia during surgery increases the risk of wound infections, cardiac complications, and blood loss 18 19. In our study we noticed no significant difference in the adherence to intra-operative normothermia between P1 and P3 (Table 2).…”

“…Intraoperative hypothermia negatively affects several outcomes, including an increase in wound infections, cardiopulmonary complications, and bleeding. 26 In addition, intraoperative hypothermia has been linked to delayed hospital discharge. 27 In this study, we could not establish a statistical correlation between hypothermia and wound complications, such as wound dehiscence or wound infection.…”
