Nowadays, most people who lead healthy lifestyles tend to use natural products as supplements, complementary medicine or alternative treatments. Honey is God’s precious gift to mankind. Honey has been highly appreciated and extensively used since ancient history due to its high nutritional and therapeutic values. It is also known to enhance fertility. In the last few decades, the important role of honey in modern medicine has been acknowledged due to the large body of convincing evidence derived from extensive laboratory studies and clinical investigations. Honey has a highly complex chemical and biological composition that consists of various essential bioactive compounds, enzymes, amino and organic acids, acid phosphorylase, phytochemicals, carotenoid-like substances, vitamins and minerals. Reproductive health and fertility rates have declined in the last 30 years. Therefore, this review aimed to highlight the protective role of honey as a potential therapeutic in maintaining reproductive health. The main role of honey is to enhance fertility and treat infertility problems by acting as an alternative to hormone replacement therapy for protecting the vagina and uterus from atrophy, protecting against the toxic effects of xeno-oestrogenic agents on female reproductive functions and helping in the treatment of gynaecological disorders, such as vulvovaginal candidiasis infection, that affect women’s lives.

Semen cryopreservation has many biotechnological applications. It can be used to solve problems of infertility, life threatening diseases, preservation of semen and DNA from endangered species and conservation of biodiversity. 1 Undeniably, researchers in areas of reproductive biology and other related fields concerned with sperm cells preservation are faced with the several challenges when carrying out their study. This has become worrisome and ultimately affects scientific experimentation and advancement in these areas especially in developing countries. 1 Understandably, there is always the need for extension of the lifespan of biological specimens like sperm cells, stem cells, and egg cells (ovum) for hours, days, weeks, months or years, so that researchers can work at convenience following specified experimental design and using globally accepted protocol. 2 Sperm cells extracted from epididymis of experimental animals are not only exposed to environmental insults but will not last long because after some hours, most or all of the cells will be death. As a consequence, experimental protocol meant to take longer period of time will suffer setbacks and so researchers are bound within time limits or left to the frustrating experience of having to start the process all over. 2 Commercially available cryopreservation media like pZerve, Cryosofreeze, Coolcell SV10, cell banker, Bam banker, Cryostor and other conventional cryopreservation solution are expensive, unavailable and stand the risk of being adulterated.

Honey production in Africa is considered an integral part of folk medicine and provides an opportunity for poor rural communities to increase their economic sustainability. In this review, we provide and discuss the data available on the positive nutritional value and health properties of honey harvested from Africa. Besides sugar, honey contains protein and amino acids, with proline which is about 50% of the total amino acids, vitamins, enzymes, some minerals (Na, K, Mg, Ca, Zn, Cu, Mn, Fe, P, S), trace elements (Mn, Ni, Li, F, I, Cl, Sr, Co) and polyphenol compounds. The paper reviewed studies on the use of African honey with anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, antibacterial, antifungal, anti-breast cancer, antidiabetic and antimycotic properties and also its positive effects on infertility (asthenozoospermia), febrile neutropenia and diabetic foot ulcers.
