Effect of Particle Size on Shear Stress of Magnetorheological Fluids

Abstract: Smart Science 65 Particle size distributionAs per Lemaire et al.[4] small sized particle means diameter = 0.5 µm and large sized particle means diameter = 1.0 µm. As per Kittipoomwong and Klingenberg [5], the larger size means two times the size of smaller size particle. Chiriac and Stoian [6] termed particle lesser than 20µm as smaller sized particle, while particles in the range of 50 to 63 µm were named as larger sized particles. This review of literature intimates the subjective nature of term "larger size… Show more

“…MR fluids are composed of micron sized magnetisable particles dispersed in a carrier liquid. MR fluids exhibit a quick transition (with in milliseconds) in the rheological behaviour, when subjected to external magnetic stimuli (Leong et al, 2016a, b;Park et al, 2001;Sarkar and Hirani, 2015). They behave like a viscous liquid (Newtonian fluid) in the absence of a magnetic field whereas in the presence of a magnetic field they attain a semi-solid like structure (viscoelastic material).…”

“…On other hand, it is important to find the effect of silver particles and copper particles on temperature distribution, which is the main aim of using nano particles. As per SEM images the iron particles are poly-disperse (Sarkar and Hirani [19]). Some iron particles are spherical in shapes and some are flake type.…”

“…Variation in structure will increase with increase in the high magnetic field. In addition, shearing of structure break and reform chains/clusters randomly without any particular orientation (Sarkar and Hirani [19]). This leads to deviations of shear stress results with high error bar compared to at that low magnetic field (Kittipoomwang et al [32]).…”

“…Sarkar and Hirani 47 found that for avoiding sedimentation, smaller sized (3-10 m) particles are favoured, whereas larger sized particles can be utilized as a part of MR brakes, MR clutches, and so on as mechanical stirring in those systems does not permit particles to settle down. Ideally larger sized particles give higher shear stress compared with smaller sized particles.…”
