Effect of Packaging and Storage on the Stability of Carbamazepine Tablets

Abstract: The effect of packaging and storage on carbamazepine (CBZ) tablets was examined using Tegretol and Tegral, dispensed in strip seals, and Finlepsin, dispensed in bottles. Tegretol and Tegral tablets were stored in their original strips at 40 degrees C, 50 degrees C, and 60 degrees C for 6 months, 3 months, and 1 month, respectively, at 75% relative humidity (RH). Also, tablets were removed from their strips, placed in bottles, and exposed daily to 97% RH at 40 degrees C for 5 min for 30 days. Finlepsin tablets … Show more

“…However, a decreased bioavailability and other property changes such as hardening and disintegration of CBZ tablets after storage have been reported. These changes have been attributed to the formation of the DH [10][11][12][13][14]. Therefore, characterizing the conversion kinetics of CBZ form III to the DH is of great importance.…”

“…A notable example of hydrate formation during tablet storage is the conversion of anhydrous carbamazepine to carbamazepine dihydrate. This transformation resulted in a pronounced decrease in the in vitro and in vivo performance of the product 12, 13. Thus, monitoring the system during various processing stages as well as during storage, will aid in understanding the influence of the processing and storage‐induced stresses on the physical form of the API in the final product.…”

“…In addition, Carbasam ® tablets were stored in a box containing more than 100 strips and soled to pharmacies as individual strips which result in them to be more exposed to heat, light, and humidity. Moreover, the type of the packing strip is another factor needed to be address [12,13]. In addition to the above, in Iraq, power outage (more than 15 h in hot summer) is also play a role in these results.…”
