Effect of ozone on periodontopathogenic species—an in vitro study

Abstract: The in vitro study was aimed to determine the effect of ozone on periodontopathogenic microorganisms. Ozone was generated for 6 s-2 × 24 s (corresponding to 0.56 mg-2 × 2.24 mg of ozone) against 23 mainly anaerobic periodontopathogenic species. Agar diffusion test was used as a screening method. Then, the killing activity was tested in a serum-free environment and with 25% v/v inactivated serum. Further, the effect of ozone on bactericidal activity of native serum was analyzed against Fusobacterium nucleatum, … Show more

“…These antiseptic agents also show significant antibacterial activity, at least against planktonic bacteria; however, ozone is expected to offer certain advantages such as low cytotoxicity and rapid quenching in the surgical wound. Previously, ozonated fluids have been shown to display antibacterial activity against a wide range of microorganisms including Escherichia coli , Enterococcus faecalis , Listeria spp. , and S. aureus .…”

“…Thus, applications of medical ozone may provide a potential benefit in the treatment of periodontal diseases by reducing and eradicating subgingival periodontopathogenic species in inaccessible sites. [4][5][6][7][8][9][10][11] Applications of medical ozone are a new treatment modality that has been developing rapidly carbonhydrates, proteins, lipids) etc. [12][13][14][15][16] While ozone has been evaluated by many clinical studies, the recent studies have reported controversial results about the benefits of its for periodontal treatment.…”

“…[12][13][14][15][16] While ozone has been evaluated by many clinical studies, the recent studies have reported controversial results about the benefits of its for periodontal treatment. Some current studies showed that a number of the periodontal pathogens are susceptible to medical ozone, suggesting that it is advantageous for conventional periodontal therapy [4][5][6][7][8][9][10][11] , whereas others reported that adjunctive use of ozone showed no significant benefits. [17][18][19][20] The some systematic reviews conclude that the inclusion of the ozone as an adjunct to conventional periodontal treatment seems to be therapeutically useful.…”
