Non-lactating, multiparous dairy cows diagnosed as having cysts by palpation per rectum were used. Cysts were induced with oestradiol-17 beta (15 mg) and progesterone (37.5 mg) dissolved in ethanol and injected s.c. twice daily for 7 days. Following initial diagnosis of cysts, ovaries were exposed by midventral laparotomy, and the perimeter of the base of each cyst was marked with subepithelial injections of charcoal. Ovaries were removed from cows by transvaginal incision at 10 days (Group 1; N = 8), 20 days (Group 2; N = 8), or 40 days (Group 3; N = 7) after marking of cysts. Ovaries were examined for structures present and their relationship to the marked site. Corpora lutea with ovulation papilla were present in 7/23 cows (1/8, 4/8 and 2/7, for Groups 1, 2 and 3, respectively). In these 7 cows, corpora lutea were at a site different from the original structure that was marked. Marked structures persisted for the duration of the experimental period in 1 and 2 cows, in Groups 1 and 3, respectively. In the remaining 13 cows, new large follicular structures (cysts) were present at a site other than that marked with charcoal. These structures developed on the ovary contralateral to the one originally marked in 9 of 13 cows. Cysts are therefore dynamic in nature and may persist or may be replaced by others.

Summary. The Clinically, the postpartum period is characterized by a period of behavioural anoestrus, the duration of which differs in different breeds.If the detection of oestrus is optimal, anoestrus lasts for 20 to 70 days in dairy cows Callahan et al., 1971 ;Schams et al., 1978 ;Pirchner et al., 1983 ;Richardson et al., 1983 ;Etherington et al., 1984). This period is highly variable in suckled cows and lasts from 30 to 110 days (Wiltbank and Cook 1958 ;Oxenreider 1968 ;Graves et al., 1968 ;Casida et al., 1968 ; Nancarrow et al., 1977 ;Holness et al., 1978 ;Wettemann et a/., 1978 ;Short et al., 1979 ;Dunn and Kaltenbach, 1980 ;Kesler et al., 1980 ;Randel, 1981 ;Montgomery, 1982 ;Peters and Riley, 1982 . Jainudeen et al., 1982Bastidas et al., 1984 ;King and Mc Leod, 1983Leod, /1984Hansen and Hauser, 1984 ;Montgomery et al., 1985).Assay of progesterone in plasma or milk has shown that 88 % of animals of dairy breeds have an luteal activity present by 35 days after calving (Ball and Lamming, 1983) and 95 % within 50 days (Bulman and Lamming, 1978). Others have found no relation between feeding and the ovarian (Lishman et al., 1979 ;Carstairs et al., 1980) or pituitary (Hill et a/., 1970 ;Dunn et al., 1974 ;Spitzer et al., 1978 ;Haresign, 1981 ;Rutter and Randel, 1984) activity.Little is known about the mechanism under which diet exerts its effect. This study investigated whether treatment with progestagen, which improves fertility after early weaning in postpartum cows, altered concentrations of gonadotrophins or development and function of follicles. Patterns of luteinizing hormone (LH), oestradiol and follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) and of follicular growth before first postpartum ovulation were compared in two experiments. At 17 to 25 days post partum, suckled anoestrous beef cows received an ear-implant containing 6 mg progestagen (norgestomet) for 9 days or served as untreated controls. Calves were weaned from all cows 7 days after initiation of treatment. Cows were observed for oestrous behaviour twice a day until 10 days after weaning. As expected, the proportion of anoestrous cows that formed a corpus luteum with a normal lifespan was greater (P < 0.01) in cows treated with norgestomet (Expt 1, 17 of 24; Expt 2, 18 of 22) than in control cows (Expt 1, 2 of 16; Expt 2, 3 of 18). In general, patterns of secretion of LH and oestradiol and of final growth of the preovulatory follicle did not differ between control and norgestomet-treated cows. However, there was a transient rise in FSH in association with weaning in control cows that did not occur in norgestomet-treated cows. In addition, mean LH increased more rapidly and mean oestradiol was higher during the 3 days immediately before the preovulatory surge of LH in the norgestomet-treated cows (P < 0.01).(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)
