Effect of Ovarian Activity and Endogenous Reproductive Hormones on GnRH-Induced Ovarian Cycles in Postpartum Dairy Cows1

Abstract: The objective was to determine the relationship of prior follicular development to GnRH-induced cyclic ovarian activity in dairy cows postpartum. Sixty lactating Holstein and Guernsey cows from the University of Missouri dairy herds were assigned at random to one of two groups. Group I consisted of 20 cows (control) given a single intramuscular (IM) injection of saline. Group II consisted of 40 cows given a single injection of 100 micrograms gonadotropin releasing hormone (GnRH) IM. Treatments were administere… Show more

“…Serum concentrations of LH and follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) were measured by heterologous double-antibody radioimmunoassay as described by Zaied et al (1980) and Garverick et al (1988), respectively. The intra-and inter-assay coefficients of variation were 11-7% and 7-9%, respectively, for LH and 9-5% and 7-9% respectively for FSH.…”

“…In the hypothalamus, suckling increases the threshold of sensitivity to the negative retro-action of oestradiol on the tonic center (Acosta et al, 1983). Suckling inhibits oestrogen synthesis by the follicular cells (Bellin et a/., 1984) for a few days but not for three weeks after calving (Walters et al, 1982a (Zolman et al, 1974 ;Yen et al, 1974 ;Kesler et al, 1977 ;Beck et al, 1978 ;Hsueh et al, 1979 ;Zaied et al, 1980 ;Kesner et al, 1981 ;Azzazi et al, 1983 ;Peters, 1984).…”

“…Ovulatory response of anoestrous cows to exogeneous GnRH has been shown to depend on size and maturity of follicles and concentrations of oestradiol (Kesler et al, 1977;Lishman et al, 1979;Zaied et al, 1980;Smith et al, 1983). Rates of follicular growth did not differ among treatments or times of ovulation.…”
