“…Our results range from 0 to12% at the inflow stream ecotype to 6 to 99% at the lake ecotype and overlap with global freshwater data (Freshwater lakes: Nijburg & Laanbroek 1997b, Nizzoli et al 2010 wetlands: Ambus et al 1992, Scott et al 2008 streams: Kelso et al 1999, Omnes et al 1996 Fig. 6).…”

“…DNRA was only measured at Lake Waco wetlands in Texas during the summer months when temperatures averaged 28.6°C, as compared to a winter average of 8.4°C (Scott et al 2008). Nizzoli et al (2010) found that DNRA was appreciably higher in Lake Verde in summer samples (13°C) compared with the winter (5°C). However, modeled DNRA was favored in more extreme temperatures (<14°C and >17°C) whereas denitrifying microbes preferred a narrow range of 14 to 17°C (Kelly-Gerreyn et al 2001).…”

“…Because the DNRA was not nitrate-limited, and the IPT calculation formulas could not be applied in all seasons due to lack of NO 3 -limitation in denitrification, we used the calculation scheme of Dong et al (2009). The DNRA rates measured were comparable to those in 2 lowland lakes (Nizzoli et al 2010) and a wetland (Scott et al 2008), but were at least 10-fold lower in comparison to marine sediments (Jørgensen 1989, Rysgaard et al 1996. High rates of DNRA have been reported from sediments that have high concentrations of sulfide and/or a high organic content, causing a low redox potential (Burgin & Hamilton 2007), and a negative correlation between O 2 concentration and DNRA rates was also found in the present study.…”

“…Data on denitrification rates, nitrate and oxygen concentrations and temperature in the water overlying the sediment, as well as the average area-specific N load rates, were obtained for 10 previously studied small to medium-sized lakes, located in the boreal and temperate zone in Europe (Ahlgren et al 1994, Mengis et al 1997, Risgaard-Petersen et al 1999, Friedrich et al 2003, Nizzoli et al 2010, Holmroos et al 2012 (Fig. 1, see Table S1 in the supplement at www.…”
