Effect of Omega-3 and Policosanol Supplementation on Attention and Reactivity in Athletes

Abstract: Supplementation with O3 + P may be effective in improving mood state and reactivity. The reaction time reduction appears to be due to a central nervous system effect, as shown by the reduced latency of movement-related brain macropotentials and EMG activation. These results are in line with previous experiments.

“…This improved various aspects of heart health, such as lowering resting heart rate, increasing heart rate variability, reducing triglycerides, decreasing small dense LDL, increasing large buoyant LDL, and reducing proatherogenic inflammatory biomarkers (von Schacky, 2014). Moreover, this intervention also improved brain structure and various aspects of complex brain function, such as prolonging attention span, reducing reaction time, reducing emotional lability, improving memory, and others (Mazereeuw et al, 2012;Sydenham et al, 2012;Stonehouse et al, 2013;Fontani et al, 2009;Witte et al, 2013).…”

“…In a study of athletes, Fontani et al [51] subjects who received supplements of omega-3 fatty acids (2.25 g) plus policosanol (10 mg) showed after 21 days of supplementation faster reaction times and increased vigor sensations associated with a reduction of anxiety, anger fatigue and depression measured on the POMS. Fontani et al [51] typically report within supplement or placebo group comparisons, but no between experimental/placebo group comparisons.…”

Antypa et al [52] observed no effects of omega-3 administration on measures of cognitive reactivity, attention, response inhibition, facial emotion recognition, memory and mood -except for fewer risk-averse decisions -in a carefully designed randomized double-blind controlled study of female students who took comparable amounts of 1.74 g EPA and 25-DHA daily for 4 weeks.…”

“…Il est recommandé de manger au moins deux fois par semaine des poissons gras. Il est à noter que de nombreuses études rapportent un lien entre la prise d'oméga-3 et la performance physique à la fois sur le plan cognitif [15] et sur celui des capacités physiques (fonction endothéliale et sa relation avec l'amélioration de la VO 2 max) [16,17].…”
