Effect of obesity on liver and kidney function in a sample from Ramadi city

Abstract

Obesity is one of the main metabolic disorder in Iraq and overall the world so the aim of the study was to assess the effect of obesity on renal function using serum creatinine, urea and uric acid tests and on hepatic function using serum aspartate aminotransferase (AST) , serum alanine aminotransferase (ALT) and bilirubin test. A total of 176 individuals were randomly selected from Ramadi city in this study and they were categorized into three sets in relation to their BMI. Set I obese, BMI ≥ 30 (n=61), set II overweight , BMI 25.0 to 29.9 (n=55) and set III Normal, BMI 18.5 to 24.9 (n=51), serum creatinine, urea, uric acid, ALT, AST and bilirubin were measured using commercially available kits, the results show that serum creatinine, urea, uric acid, ALT and AST were significantly higher in obese compared to overweight and normal sets (p<0.001).Obesity increase the risk for having renal and hepatic disease. Controlling obesity is necessary for protection liver and kidney health.
