“…(Gbolagade, Fasidi, Ajayi, & Sobowale, 2006), Chinese species Pleurotus tuber-regium (Fr.) (Wu, Cheung, Wong, & Huang, 2003;Wu, Cheung, Wong, & Huang, 2004), Cordyceps militaris (Mao & Zhong, 2006) and Brazilian specie Agaricus brasiliensis (A. blazei) (Fan, Soccol, Pandey, & Soccol, 2007), no studies were found for the Portuguese species and no reports are known about the influence of the nitrogen source in the bioactive properties of wild edible mushrooms. In this work, we evaluated the effects of various nitrogen sources on the production and functional properties of Leucopaxillus giganteus mycelium.…”

“…3)-glucan side branches. This fungus has been properly adapted to grow in liquid substrates, with several studies proposing its experimental optimization in SmF for the production of mycelial biomass and exopolysaccharides (Lin and Yang 2006;Fan et al 2007;Hamedi et al 2007). Examples of experimental optimization for several fungal species in SSF for the production of industrially important products have been proposed (Prakash et al 2008;Baños et al 2009).…”

“…Gadd (1995) showed that calcium ions play an important role in the regulation of the apical mycelia growth as well as in the formation of hyphal branches, corroborating the positive effects promoted by this micronutrient. Lin and Yang (2006) obtained the highest mycelium yield of A. subrufescens in SmF with an initial pH of 6.06 and an incubation temperature of 27 C. Fan et al (2007) observed that a pH of 6.1 and a temperature of 30 C were the best setting points for increases in exopolysaccharide production. Other results show maximal biomass yield and exopolysaccharide production to happen at pH 5.6 and 6.9, with incubation temperatures of 24.6 and 20 C, respectively (Hamedi et al 2007).…”

“…The mushroom Agaricus brasiliensis, also known as A. blazei or A. subrufescens (Wasser et al, 2002;Kerrigan, 2005;Dias et al, 2008), has received great interest since the end of the 20th century, and several papers were recently published highlighting its medicinal properties (Kawagishi et al, 1989;Mizuno et al, 1990aMizuno et al, ,b, 1995Ito et al, 1997;Kaneno et al, 2004;Mizuno & Kawakami, 2006;Fan et al, 2007;Firenzuoli et al, 2008).…”
