Effect of nutrition of parasites with nectar of melliferous plants on parasitism of the elm bark beetles (Col., Scolytidae)

Abstract: In the forest of Kljestevica, the elm is attacked by four species of elm bark beetles: Scolytus multistriatus (Marsh.), Scolytus scolytus (Fab.), Scolytus pygmaeus (Fab.) and Scolytus ensifer (Rich.) (Col., Scolytidae). Scolytus multistriatus and S. pygmaeus are the most numerous species. Elm bark beetle is parasitized by four species of parasites: Dendrosoter protuberans (Nees), Ecphylus silesiacus (Ratz.), Coeloides scolyticida (Wesm.) (Hym., Braconidae) and Entedon leucogramma (Ratz.) (Hym., Eulophidae). Ec… Show more

“…Possibly, its nectar composition is especially suitable to support egg maturation in this insect. The effect of S. alba nectar on parasitoid fitness has not been previously reported in existing literature, although in field surveys, natural parasitism of beetles increased in areas close to margins of this plant species (Manojlovic et al 2000), suggesting that hymenoptera parasitoids may use these flowers as food resources.…”

“…White mustard flower nectar had a great effect on the average number of parasitoids and parasitism of the Scolytus elm bark beetle, Scolytus scolytus Fabr. (Coleoptera: Curculionidae) [35]. In the catch trunks alongside the areas growing mustard, the numbers of parasitoids were higher (average of 5.53 parasitoids per dm 2 of bark) in the first generation than in the control (average of 2.92 parasitoids per dm 2 of bark).…”
