EFFECT OF NUTRIENT LIMITATION ON FATTY ACID AND LIPID CONTENT OF MARINE MICROALGAE1

Abstract: Phaeodactylum tricornutum and Chaetoceros sp. (Badllariophyceae), Isochrysis galbana (clone T‐Iso) and Pavlova lutheri (Prymnesiophyceae), Nannochloris atomus (Chlorophyceae), Tetraselmis sp. (Prasinophyceae), and Gymnodinum sp. (Dinophyceae) were cultured at different extents of nutrient‐limited growth: 50 and 5% of μmax. The lipid content of the algae was in the range 8.3–29.5% of dry matter and was generally higher in the Prymnesiophyceae than in the Prasinophyceae and the Chlorophyceae. Increasing extent o… Show more

“…Total acidic lipid (such as sulphoquinovosyldiacylglycerol and PG) content of the chloroplast did not change significantly since a decrease in one acidic lipid was accompanied by an increase in another acidic lipid [181]. Phosphate limitation also reduces the synthesis of n-3 PUFA [182].…”

“…(Bacillariophyceae), and I. galbana and Pavlova lutheri (Prymnesiophyceae), but decreased lipid content in Nannochloris atomus (Chlorophyceae) and Tetraselmis sp. (Prasinophyceae) (Reitan et al, 1994). Of marine species examined (Reitan et al, 1994), increasing phosphorus deprivation was found to result in a higher relative content of 16:0 and 18:1 and a lower relative content of 18:4x3, 20:5x3 and 22:6x3.…”

Studies have also shown that sulfur deprivation enhanced the total lipid content in the green algae Chlorella sp.…”

“…The biochemical analyses of biofilm combined with biomass data provide a closer estimate of food quantity and quality actually available for higher consumers. Moreover, the biochemical composition represents an integration of environmental fluctuations in addition to endogenous variations of the organisms (Reitan et al 1994, Worm et al 2000, Rathore & Kumar 1993.…”
