Aims: The colours of the polymer used during brooding could impair the vision of the chicks. For chicks reared in the dark environment, they have limited access to daylight and find it difficult to gain access to feed and water. Therefore, for better understanding of the effect of the polymer colours on broiler production in the humid tropical climate, a study was carried out to evaluate the effect of coloured polymer light filter and feed forms on performance of broiler chickens. Methodology: A total of two hundred and forty (240) chicks were allocated in 2 × 4 factorial arrangements with two feed forms (mash and pellet). The chicks were reared under four (4) different coloured polymer light filter, namely; white (T1), blue (T2), black (T3), and green (T4) and an incandescent bulb (100 Watts) each. Results: The results showed that the birds reared under the white polymer light filter had the highest weight gain (1565.28 g), while the least weight gain (1469.72 g) was observed in birds reared under black polymer light filter. For rectal temperature of the birds, it was discovered that broiler chicken reared under white polymer light filter had the highest rectal temperature (39.63°C), while the least rectal temperature of 39.33°C was observed in the chicken reared under black polymer light filter. The highest environmental temperature (34.03°C) was observed in birds reared under black polymer light filter, while the least environmental temperature (30.03°C) was observed in birds reared under white polymer light filter. The results further showed that birds fed with pelletized feed form had the highest weight gain than the birds fed with mashed feed form. Conclusions: From the findings of this study, it is certain that polymer light filter and feed forms are important factors that could influence birds’ performance.

Tujuan dari ulasan ini adalah untuk memberikan gambaran tentang potensi bahan pakan alternatif sumber energi untuk substitusi jagung pada unggas. Ulasan ini membahas kandungan nutrien, rekomendasi batasan penggunaan dan dampak penggunaan bahan pakan alternatif terhadap produktifitas unggas. Bahan pakan alternatif yang dapat digunakan diantaranya adalah sorgum, gandum, jewawut, gaplek, tepung kentang, onggok, bungkil sawit, tepung kulit pisang, solid heavy phase, menir beras, mie afkir, dan roti afkir. Penggunaan bahan pakan alternatif harus memperhatikan batasan penggunaan, jenis unggas dan umur unggas. Selain itu, penggunaan bahan pakan alternatif juga harus diformulasikan dengan memperhatikan keseimbangan nutrien utama yaitu energi metabolis, protein kasar, serat kasar, lemak kasar, asam amino pembatas, kalsium, fosfor, dan densitas pakan. Penggunaan bahan pakan alternatif sesuai batasan penggunaan dapat menekan harga pakan, produktifitas ternak unggas tetap optimal, dan meningkatkan profitabiltas peternak.

The effect of nutritional density on performance and egg quality has not been stablished in hens at high altitudes. This study evaluated the effect of different nutritional densities on performance and egg quality of laying hens at high altitude. Sixty 45-weeks old Hy-Line Brown hens distributed in 12 cages (5 birds each) and assigned to one of three dietary treatments (i.e, low nutritional density, LND; medium nutritional density, MND –control diet; high nutritional density, HND) were fed during four weeks and assessed during the las one. Feed intake, egg production rate, egg mass, feed conversion ratio, and external and internal egg quality were evaluated. No differences were observed in performance, egg weight, egg length, egg width, egg surface area, and egg shape index (P > 0.05). Shell weight, thickness, and weight per unit of surface area were higher in the LND and MND diets compared to the HND (P = 0.003, P = 0.017, and P = 0.031, respectively). While dense albumen length was greater in the control diet (MND) compared to LND and HND (P = 0.049), no other internal quality trait showed differences (P > 0.05). In conclusion, laying hens fed LND and MND diets showed better shell integrity (greater shell weight and thickness).
