“…These findings do not agree with those of Manoukas and Young (1969) for a mixture of non-essential amino acids. However, the data substantiate the findings of many other researchers (Moran et al, 1967;Akintunde et al, 1968;Blair and Lee, 1973;Kazemi and Balloun, 1973) who did not find a positive response to supplementing diets with various NPN sources.…”

“…Consumption of methionine amounted to an average of 336 mg. per bird per day with 233 mg. cystine on the 12% protein diet. The daily methionine intake requirements have been variously estimated as 312 mg./day with a level of 191 mg. cystine by Moran et al (1967); 511 mg. methionine plus cystine by Harms and Damron (1969); 583 mg. total sulfur amino acids by N.R.C. (1971); 523 mg. by Balloun and Speers (1969) and 550 mg. by Combs (1961).…”

“…Chavez et al (1966) also demonstrated improvements in egg production with either diammonium citrate or diammonium phosphate supplementation to a 12.75% protein practical diet. Moran et al (1967) were unable to find an improvement in laying hen performance with the feeding of 5% protein equivalent from either diammonium citrate or urea in a 10% protein corn-soybean meal diet even though the basal diet was calculated to be adequate in essential amino acids. In a second experiment employing 2% protein equivalent from diammonium citrate or urea in a 10% protein diet for chicks, no significant improvements in growth rate were obtained.…”

“…Several workers (e.g. Womack et al, 1953;Moran et al, 1967;Akintunde et al, 1968;Bornstein and Lipstein, 1968) found no evidence that laying hens were able to utilise NPN sources for egg production, while others (Reid et al, 1972;Fernandez et al, 1973) did. At the same time Damron and Harms (1973) found that laying hens could utilise inorganic sulphate to replace part of the sulphur amino acid requirements, though an earlier study (Jansen, 1972) had failed to demonstrate such a relationship.…”
