Effect of negative pressure wound therapy on wound healing

Abstract: The efficacy of NPWT in promoting wound healing has been largely accepted by clinicians, yet the number of high-level clinical studies demonstrating its effectiveness is small and much more can be learned about the mechanisms of action. In the future, hopefully we will have the data to assist clinicians in selecting optimal parameters for specific wounds including interface material, waveform of suction application, and the amount of suction to be applied. Further investigation into specific interface coatings… Show more

“…The associated complications include hemorrhage, blistering, odors, skin erosion around the suction tube, sepsis and obstruction of the suction tube (33). A number of the aforementioned complications, although rarely observed, may be severe; thus, close observation and assessment of the wound throughout the entire process of NPWT is necessary.…”

“…For wounds with oedema, these devices have the capacity to remove a large amount of fluid. 6 NPWT can be very useful for the management of enteroatmospheric fistula. 7 Continuous suction of the fistula output minimizes contact time between intestinal fluid and exposed peritoneum, thus effectively controlling intestinal spillage.…”

“…The primary effect of NPWT in wound healing is complex (Table 1) [11]. Due to vacuum there is a macroscopic shrinkage of the wound (macrodeformation) [12].…”
