Effect of Nanoparticles Surface Bonding and Aspect Ratio on Mechanical Properties of Highly Cross-Linked Epoxy Nanocomposites: Mesoscopic Simulations

Abstract: The paper aims to study the mechanical properties of epoxy resin filled with clay nanoparticles (NPs), depending on their shapes and content on the surface of a modifying agent capable of forming covalent bonds with a polymer. The cylindrical clay nanoparticles with equal volume and different aspects ratios (disks, barrel, and stick) are addressed. The NPs’ bonding ratio with the polymer (RGC) is determined by the fraction of reactive groups and conversion time and varies from RGC = 0 (non-bonded nanoparticles… Show more

“…We have used this method repeatedly in the past as it provides a flexible way to overcome the limitations of the available spatiotemporal scales in modelling polymer nanocomposites, see for example. 47,[70][71][72] The DPD methodology for polymers is described in detail in the following publications [68][69][70] and, for convenience, in Section S1 of the ESI † file. Some details of the terminology used in DPD are given below to allow the reader to better understand the peculiarities of the construction and parameterisation of the model studied.…”

“…The high aspect ratio (lateral length/thickness ratio > 50) and platelet shape characterize the micas as fillers and influence the physical properties of nanocomposites in a different way with respect to spherical particles (SiO 2 and Al 2 O 3 ) [ 27 , 28 ].…”
