Effect of multiscale structure on the gas barrier properties of poly(lactic acid)/Ag nanocomposite films

Abstract: Poly(lactic acid) (PLA) is the most suitable for biodegradable packaging film because of its excellent integrated property, but the poor gas barrier property is its weakness. In this study, a nanocomposite film based on PLA incorporated with 0‐, 1‐, 3‐, 5‐, 10‐, or 15‐wt% nano‐Ag was developed. Effect of multiscale structure on the barrier properties of PLA/nano‐Ag films was studied. The PLA nanocomposite film with 5‐wt% nano‐Ag had the lowest water vapor permeability (WVP) value. Oxygen transmission rate (OTR… Show more

“…The PLA/1.5%-SeMP composite membrane showed the lowest WVP of 3.55 × 10 −14 g·cm/cm 2 ·s·Pa, which is 30.6% lower than that of the pure PLA. This may be due to the SeMPs entering the pores of the PLA molecular chain, resulting in the formation of a tortuous diffusion channel for the water vapor molecules in the polymer matrix [64]. This is like results obtained previously.…”

“…WVP of the film was determined gravimetrically according to ASTM E96 standard method as described in a previous work 25 . A weighing bottle containing 12 g of anhydrous silica gel was sealed with the test film and placed in a desiccator with saturated sodium chloride solution at the bottom.…”

“…Some metal oxide nanoparticles, such as CuO [ 41 ] and ZnO [ 42 ] also exhibit strong antimicrobial activities that are comparable to that of AgNPs. The solid core of these spherical nanoparticles is impermeable so the transport of molecules across the structure has not been reported [ 43 , 44 ]. The surface hydrophilicity of these nanoparticles is one of the main reasons that makes them favorably used in the preparation of liquid-separation membranes.…”
